Digital minimalism is the deliberate choice of digital tools and habits according to how well they support what matters to you. It is not a ban on technology: keep tools that provide meaningful value, question those that do not, and set boundaries around the way you use them. To begin, identify your priorities, audit your apps and habits, then try either a focused break from optional tools or a smaller boundary such as muting nonessential notifications.
What digital minimalism means
Cal Newport defines digital minimalism as “a philosophy that helps you question what digital communication tools (and behaviors surrounding these tools) add the most value to your life.” The point is not to minimize your technology count for its own sake. It is to make each tool earn its place by helping with a priority you actually have.

That means asking two questions about an app, site, feed, or device habit: Does it meaningfully support something important to me? And is this the best way to get that value? A messaging app might be useful for staying in touch with family, for instance, while endless checking of its feed may not serve the same purpose. The right answer depends on your circumstances, not a universal list of apps to delete. Newport’s explanation of digital minimalism sets out this values-first approach.
Digital minimalism vs. a digital detox
A digital detox is generally a temporary break from devices or particular services. Digital minimalism is an ongoing way of deciding which tools to use and under what conditions. A detox or declutter can be part of that larger practice: the break helps you notice habits, and the decisions you make afterward determine what your digital life looks like going forward. Calm’s guide to digital minimalism also distinguishes a temporary detox from a continuing approach.

How to start practicing digital minimalism
1. Decide what you want more room for
Name the priority you want your technology habits to serve—or the activity you want more time for. It might be focused work, rest, family time, creative projects, or in-person connection. A clear priority gives you a practical test for whether a tool is helping.
2. Audit your tools and habits
List the apps, websites, feeds, and device routines you use regularly. Mark which ones are essential for work, caregiving, safety, or logistics; consider optional use separately. For each optional tool, write down the value it is supposed to provide and whether it provides that value reliably. Reviewing apps and accounts for a clear purpose is also part of Calm’s practical guidance.

3. Choose a reset or a small boundary
If you want a structured experiment, Newport’s digital declutter approach is to take a planned break from optional technologies and then reintroduce only those that offer compelling value. His account describes a 31-day break followed by rebuilding from a blank slate. Essential responsibilities are not the same as optional use, so decide in advance what you need to retain for work, care, safety, or logistics. Newport reported that more than 1,600 people signed up for his January 2018 declutter; that is a sign-up count, not a controlled sample or a measure of success. His account of the declutter describes the approach and participant examples.
A full reset is not required. If it would disrupt essential duties or feel unsustainable, start with one or two manageable boundaries: mute nonessential notifications, keep the first part of the morning phone-free, or check messages at set times. Calm’s guide presents these smaller changes as practical ways to begin.

- Standalone minimalist phone that can be used to call and text. Group texting is supported
- The Light Phone II is built around a user-customizable menu of tools. All of the tools are custom-designed for our LightOS to ensure a thoughtful, and private user experience. Available tools currently include an alarm, a calculator, directions, a simple music player, notes/voice memo, calendar and a podcasts tool. The phone also supports hotspot tethering. We'll continue to release other utility-oriented tools, which will be available with software updates.
4. Plan what will replace the screen time
Decide what you will do in the moments when you would usually scroll or check an app. Options include reading, taking a walk, cooking, exercising, making something, calling a friend, or spending time on a demanding hobby. Newport’s participant stories describe people turning free time toward activities such as art, chess, walks, and relationships. These are self-reported examples of possible replacements, not evidence that everyone will have the same experience.
5. Reintroduce tools with specific rules
After a break—or when you review an existing habit—consider each optional tool on its own. Keep it only if it supports a named priority and works better than the alternatives available to you. Then decide how you will use it. For example, you might use a social platform to contact a particular group rather than browse its feed, or check messages during chosen windows instead of whenever a notification appears. Limit or remove tools that do not meet your test.

6. Review the experiment and adjust
After trying a boundary, ask whether it helped with the priority you chose and whether it was workable in ordinary life. If it was not, change the rule or try a smaller one; an all-or-nothing attempt that did not fit your circumstances is not proof that you lack discipline. The declutter-and-reintroduction model is meant to help you make considered choices, not to impose a single permanent rule.

A 2025 study by Schraggeová and Bisaha examined a digital detox using the MinimalistPhone app. The study page describes a pretest-posttest intervention with an experimental group of 29 participants (mean age 22.8, SD 5.01) and a control group of 28 (mean age 25, SD 8.08). Measures included smartphone-use patterns, affective states, and objectively measured screen time. Those design details alone do not establish the size or significance of any outcome, nor do they show that a particular app or method will improve mental health, focus, or productivity for everyone. The study page identifies the study and its design.

- Distraction Free: The MP02 4G cell phone makes it easier to be where you are—whether that’s a weekend away or an important business meeting. Keep what matters close with calls and SMS-first texting, without the constant onslaught of designed-for-addiction notifications.
- Privacy & Security Focused: Built with security in mind from the start, the MP02 is designed to help safeguard your information without requiring you to share more personal data than necessary. Enjoy peace of mind with a phone experience that prioritizes discretion and control.
- Carrier Compatibility & Connection: AT&T is supported (coverage verified, VoLTE supported). T-Mobile is supported, but VoLTE is not supported. Verizon is not supported. Many US carriers use VoLTE for voice calls - if VoLTE isn’t supported on your carrier, call performance may be limited even with signal. The MP02 supports 4G LTE across key bands (2G: 850/900/1800/1900 3G: WCDMA 1/2/4/5/6/8/19 4G: FDD LTE 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/19/20).
- Simple By Design: A minimalist interface keeps everyday actions straightforward. Call and text buttons provide quick access, while a streamlined menu helps you stay focused on essentials. Note: messaging is SMS-first (MMS group chats aren’t supported), helping to keep communication simple.
- Built for Everyday: Designed for comfortable one-handed use with a clean, minimalist silhouette. Reinforced glass fiber construction supports daily use, while the lightweight shape makes it easy to carry anywhere.
Digital minimalism is therefore best approached as a way to make and review personal choices, not as a guaranteed treatment or productivity shortcut. The useful question is whether a tool and its rules help you live according to your own priorities.
