What is digital component video?
In component video, picture information is represented as separate components. In digital workflows, those components are encoded as digital data; they are not a single composite signal. “Digital component video” describes a way of representing video, not one universal connector, cable, or wire format.

The distinction matters because standards and interfaces specify different things. ITU-R BT.601 sets digital television encoding parameters, while ITU-R BT.656 describes an interface for digital component signals in a particular television-system context. The ITU-R broadcasting recommendations catalog identifies BT.656’s scope as 525-line and 625-line systems operating at BT.601’s 4:2:2 level.

- Y’ is a luma-like component derived from nonlinear video signals. The prime mark is significant: Y’ is not necessarily physical luminance.
- Cb and Cr are color-difference chroma components.
Y’CbCr is a common way of encoding RGB information. The equations that relate the representations depend on the applicable recommendation; ITU-T identifies BT.601, BT.709, BT.2020, and BT.2100 as recommendations that provide matrix coefficients for the relationship between Y’CbCr and R’G’B’. Is Y’CbCr the same as Y’PbPr?
No. They are related component representations, but the names refer to different signal domains. Y’CbCr is used for digital video; Y’PbPr refers to analog component video. Microsoft Learn explains the relationship and terminology in About YUV Video. When describing a device connection, specify whether it carries digital Y’CbCr or analog Y’PbPr rather than relying on the broad phrase “component video.”
Does digital component video have to be 4:2:2?
No. Chroma sampling is a property of a particular format or interface, not a universal requirement of digital component video. BT.656 covers a specific 4:2:2 interface context; it does not mean every digital component format uses 4:2:2.

The Library of Congress documents an uncompressed YCbCr 4:2:2 picture stream and describes BT.601 as providing a common digital standard across NTSC, PAL, and SECAM television systems. That is an example of a format and its context, not a definition that applies to all component video. See Uncompressed YCbCr Video Picture Stream (4:2:2).

How do BT.601, BT.656, and BT.709 differ?
- BT.601 specifies studio encoding parameters for digital television in standard 4:3 and widescreen 16:9 aspect ratios. ITU-R lists BT.601-7, approved in March 2011, as the in-force main version; BT.601-6 is superseded. Check the ITU-R BT.601 page for status.
- BT.656 specifies an interface for digital component signals in 525-line and 625-line systems operating at the BT.601 4:2:2 level. Its scope is narrower than the general idea of digital component video.
- BT.709 supplies high-definition luma equations in Microsoft’s explanation, while BT.601 is identified there with standard-definition equations. These are not alternative names for Y’CbCr itself or for a connector.
In short, Y’CbCr names a component representation, an encoding recommendation sets relevant parameters, and an interface recommendation describes how signals are conveyed within its specified scope.
