Denuvo Anti-Tamper is a game protection technology intended to make a PC game’s code harder to crack or modify. It is not the same as Denuvo Anti-Cheat, which is designed to detect and block cheating during play. Its effects on performance, connectivity, leftover files, and removal depend on the individual game and its publisher’s implementation.
What is Denuvo Anti-Tamper?
Denuvo is a family of game security products from Irdeto. Its Anti-Tamper, also described as Anti-Piracy, product aims to deter cracking and unauthorized modification. Irdeto describes techniques including code obfuscation and integrity checks at startup and while a game is running. The company also offers other products, so the name should not be treated as synonymous with every form of game protection.

There is no single FPS or frame-time figure that applies to every game using Denuvo. Irdeto says its technology preserves performance and has no perceived impact, but that is the vendor’s claim, not proof that every game implementation has zero cost. The available official material does not establish a universal performance effect across current titles.

To assess a specific game, look for testing of the same game version and patch on the same hardware, with the same settings and test scene. A comparison is more informative when Denuvo is the only variable changed; comparisons between different patches can also reflect other fixes, optimizations, or changes. Check that a benchmark reports frame times or FPS and explains its test conditions before drawing a conclusion about that title.
Does Denuvo require an internet connection?
Not universally. Irdeto’s Anti-Piracy datasheet says the product does not require an always-online connection, but a publisher can set title-specific authentication requirements. For example, Square Enix’s disclosure for DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Withered World, last updated September 9, 2026, says that an internet connection is required to verify the license and that the protection may download authentication data. That requirement applies to the named game, not automatically to other Denuvo titles.

For a particular game, check its current publisher disclosure and store listing rather than assuming that another game’s terms apply.

Can Denuvo files remain after uninstall?
They can in at least some title-specific implementations. Square Enix’s disclosure for DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Withered World says certain anti-tamper files may remain after the software is uninstalled. This is a statement about that game, not a guarantee that every Denuvo-protected game leaves files behind—or removes all related files—when uninstalled.

Why do publishers remove Denuvo?
The decision belongs to the publisher, and removal may involve a game update rather than a setting players can change themselves. The publisher may also retain other protection after Denuvo support ends.
Hi-Fi RUSH: a scheduled end to support
In a notice dated December 4, 2025, KRAFTON said Denuvo support for the PC version of Hi-Fi RUSH was scheduled to end at 00:00 KST on January 16, 2026. The notice said players would need a new patch by that deadline to continue playing, and that KRAFTON’s own anti-tampering features would remain. This illustrates why players should follow the publisher’s patch instructions when protection changes.

inZOI: feedback and modding considerations
On March 26, 2025, KRAFTON announced that it had decided to remove Denuvo from the inZOI Early Access build. Producer and director Kjun cited Denuvo’s original purpose of preventing illegal distribution, community feedback, and a desire for more configurability and modding. He also acknowledged the studio’s view that removing Denuvo increases the risk of cracking and illegal distribution after release. The example shows that publishers may weigh protection against player and development considerations; it does not establish a single reason shared by every publisher.

When comparing two games or builds, separate measured results from general claims. Record the exact game and edition, version and patch date, hardware, settings, test scene, and measured FPS or frame times. Also check whether authentication terms changed, and whether another protection or optimization changed alongside Denuvo. For a removal, look for the publisher’s stated rationale, any required patch, and whether another protection remains.
Irdeto’s 2023 datasheet reports a 180-day average crack-free period and more than 1,000 games protected. Those are vendor-reported figures, not independent measurements, and they do not establish how a particular game performs or what requirements its players face.
