The encoder sends the feed to that server; the platform checks and registers it, then prepares it for viewers. The exact URL format, key requirements, supported protocol and video settings depend on the destination.
What “custom RTMP” means
RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol, used to deliver live media to an ingest server. “Custom” describes how you configure the encoder: rather than selecting only a built-in service preset, you enter the destination details supplied by the platform. OBS calls this option “Custom Streaming Server.”
The encoder captures and composes sources such as gameplay, a webcam or a display, encodes the result, and sends it over the internet. The ingest server is the stream’s first stop: it receives the feed, authorizes and registers it, and prepares it for viewers. See Twitch’s explanation of its video broadcast ingest system.
What the server URL and stream key do
- Server URL: Identifies the ingest endpoint receiving the stream. Services may call it an “RTMP URL,” “broadcast URL” or “Stream URL.”
- Stream key: Identifies or authorizes your broadcast at that destination. It is a credential, not the public link viewers use to watch.
Some encoders ask for the URL and key in separate fields; others expect a combined address. Always copy the current values and format from the destination’s dashboard or official documentation. Twitch documents a general address form of rtmp://<ingest-server>/app/<stream-key>, but that is Twitch’s format, not a universal RTMP template. Its optional bandwidthtest=true parameter can be used with Twitch Inspector to test bandwidth without making the stream live. See Twitch’s broadcast documentation.

YouTube’s API distinguishes primary and backup ingestion addresses, stream names and RTMP/RTMPS fields. Depending on the encoder, its stream URL and stream name may be entered separately or combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Do not assume the Twitch format, or any platform’s format, applies elsewhere. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation.
Set up a custom RTMP destination in OBS
- Get the destination details. In the platform’s dashboard, create or select the live broadcast and retrieve its current server URL and stream key. YouTube provides these in Live Control Room; Twitch exposes assigned keys through its broadcaster dashboard. Never use a key copied from an old setup without checking that it belongs to the intended broadcast.
- Enter them in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, choose Custom Streaming Server, then enter the platform’s URL and stream key in the fields provided. OBS documents this workflow in its overview guide.
- Choose the secure endpoint when available. If the platform offers RTMPS and your encoder supports it, use the RTMPS address. For YouTube, the RTMPS variant is available from the lock icon in Live Control Room; the default display may show the ordinary RTMP address. YouTube recommends RTMPS. See YouTube’s RTMPS help page.
- Match the output to the destination. Set resolution, frame rate, video codec, keyframe interval and bitrate to meet the platform’s current requirements and your connection’s upload capacity. There is no one setting that fits every service or connection.
- Start and verify before announcing. Start the encoder, then check the destination dashboard for incoming video and audio and a usable stream status. The exact status labels and how quickly they appear vary by platform.
OBS’s overview guide notes that bitrate must account for both upload speed and the service’s limits. For YouTube specifically, its published encoder settings support RTMP/RTMPS and list H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not universal RTMP requirements. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings before configuring a broadcast.

RTMP versus RTMPS
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, encrypting the connection in transit. For a standard YouTube setup, use the RTMPS address shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming an ordinary RTMP URL is interchangeable. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion documentation specifies port 443 and requires the destination hostname for TLS SNI authentication. See YouTube Help and the Google for Developers RTMPS ingestion guide, last updated September 14, 2026.
If your device or encoder does not support RTMPS, consult its documentation and the platform’s currently supported ingestion options. Do not change a URL from rtmps to rtmp or alter the port unless the destination explicitly provides those details.

Protect your stream key
Treat the key like a password: do not include it in screenshots, public documentation or an untrusted third-party service. Twitch warns that sharing a key can compromise the channel. If it is exposed, use the platform’s key-management controls to replace or reset it. See the Twitch Stream Key FAQ.
Troubleshoot common custom RTMP errors
“The RTMP server sent an invalid SSL certificate”
- For YouTube RTMPS, verify that the address begins with
rtmps, notrtmp, and that it uses the RTMPS hostname and port 443. - Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS and is actually establishing TLS. For a custom encoder implementation, check that TLS SNI uses the destination hostname.
- Copy the current address from Live Control Room again rather than guessing the hostname or editing the URL.
These checks address common protocol, port, server-name and SSL configuration causes identified in Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

“Failed to connect” or “connection timed out”
- Check that the URL is complete and belongs to the stream you selected.
- For YouTube RTMPS, confirm that the encoder supports TLS and is not trying to make a cleartext RTMP connection to an RTMPS endpoint.
- Verify the RTMPS port and hostname against the current platform-provided settings.
The encoder connects, but the platform shows no usable live stream
- Confirm that the stream key matches the selected endpoint and broadcast. A valid connection to the wrong stream details may not register the broadcast you intend.
- Check the destination dashboard’s status and confirm that video and audio are arriving.
- Compare codec, resolution, frame rate and keyframe interval with that platform’s current encoder requirements.
A stream key authorizes or identifies the ingest session; it is not the public viewing URL. Twitch describes authorization and registration at ingest, while YouTube exposes stream status and ingestion details through its LiveStreams API.
Dropped frames or unstable output
Compare the configured bitrate with the upload capacity available to the encoder, and reduce the output demands if the connection or computer cannot sustain them. OBS notes that bitrate depends on upload speed and service limits. Dropped frames can also involve source capture or encoding load, so an RTMP protocol change alone may not fix the problem. See the OBS overview guide.

Do you need a capture card?
Only if you need to bring a separate HDMI source, such as a camera or console, into the computer running OBS. A capture card is an optional source-acquisition accessory; it is not required for custom RTMP configuration itself. OBS lists capture cards among the sources you can add to a scene. No particular model is required by the RTMP workflow.
