Its central unit is a profile: a self-contained game instance with a chosen Minecraft version, modloader, mods, configurations, and—when included—resource packs, data packs, shaders, and other files.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
To install a published pack, install and open the CurseForge app, select Minecraft, browse Modpacks, choose a pack, click Install, then launch it from My Modpacks. The most important rule is compatibility: every mod must support the profile’s Minecraft version and modloader.

What CurseForge does
CurseForge combines a project website with a desktop manager for modded Minecraft. Instead of manually copying files into one global game folder, the app creates separate profiles that can be launched and maintained independently.
CurseForge Support defines a profile as “Profiles are collections of settings and files required to launch a custom modded instance of Minecraft: Java Edition.” In practical terms, a profile records the Minecraft release, the modloader, installed mods, configuration files, and the location of that instance’s game data. A published modpack is a prepared profile distributed to other players.
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
A pack can contain more than Java mod files. Depending on its author, it may include resource packs, data packs, shaders, maps, scripts, and tuned configuration files. Those pieces are intended to work together, so replacing one file casually can change the pack’s behavior or make it fail to start.
Supported profile types
The app supports modded profiles using Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt. It can also create a Vanilla profile with no modloader. The loader is the component that reads mods and associated files while Minecraft starts. A Forge mod is not automatically usable in Fabric, and a mod built for one Minecraft release is not automatically usable in another.

- Minecraft: Java Edition for PC: CurseForge profiles launch Java Edition. You must be able to sign in with the account that owns and can run the game.
- The CurseForge desktop app: The app performs profile creation, downloads files, resolves supported versions, and starts the selected launcher.
- A compatible profile plan: Know whether the pack uses Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt and which Minecraft version it targets. You can confirm these details on the pack’s page before installing.
- Writable storage: The app must be able to create folders and write downloaded files. Security software, cloud-sync folders, and restrictive permissions can interfere.
- Java: CurseForge states that Java is required for Minecraft modpacks. Keeping the installed Java version current avoids a common class of launch errors.
Modpacks vary substantially in memory use and content. A technology-heavy or shader-focused pack can demand more resources than a small quality-of-life pack, but there is no universal RAM requirement. Use the author’s stated requirements when available rather than applying one number to every pack.
Install a published modpack
This is the normal route when you want a pack already assembled by its creator.
- Install and open the CurseForge desktop app.
- Select Minecraft from the game’s list.
- Open Browse or Discover, then choose Modpacks.
- Use the available filters for Minecraft version, modloader, category, or other facets. Filtering first prevents you from choosing a pack that cannot run with the version or loader you need.
- Open a pack’s details and review its Minecraft version, loader, included content, update history, and any stated resource or multiplayer requirements.
- Click Install. CurseForge downloads the pack and configures its profile, including the loader and listed files.
- Open My Modpacks and wait until the profile shows that installation has completed.
- Select the profile and click Play.
On a first launch, CurseForge may hand off to the Mojang or Microsoft launcher. Sign in if prompted, select the expected installation, and allow the game to finish loading. The initial start can take longer because Minecraft and the pack may create configuration files and caches.

Install from the CurseForge website
If you discover a pack on the CurseForge website, use its Install deep link. Click Install on the web page, choose Open when the browser asks which application should handle the link, and the desktop app will begin installing the profile. If the link does nothing, confirm that the desktop app is installed and that your browser has not blocked the handoff.
Import an exported pack
A creator or friend may give you an exported pack as a file or code instead of a public project page. In the Minecraft section of the app, use the import option and select the supplied file or enter the supplied code. For a file import, the ZIP must be valid and include a manifest.json file. A ZIP that is damaged, incomplete, or missing that manifest cannot be reconstructed by the app.
Create a custom profile or modpack
Creating a profile gives you control over the Minecraft version, loader, and content rather than installing a finished collection.
- Open the Minecraft section of CurseForge and click Create.
- Enter a profile name that identifies its purpose, such as a test instance or a particular server pack.
- Choose the Minecraft version.
- Choose a modloader and loader version. If you are unsure, keep the automatically selected compatible settings instead of guessing an older or different loader.
- Click to create the profile, then open it under My Modpacks.
- Choose Add More Content.
- Search for and install the desired mods, resource packs, or maps. Review each item’s supported Minecraft version and loader before adding it.
- Return to the profile and click Play when the collection is ready.
CurseForge can also start this process from a mod’s page. When you select a mod, the app detects a compatible game version and loader, then lets you create a new profile or choose an existing one. This is useful when you begin with one specific mod, but you should still inspect the resulting profile before adding more content.
Add a mod to an existing profile
Open My Modpacks, select the target profile, and click Add More Content. Search for the mod, open its entry, and choose the install action. CurseForge checks the profile’s Minecraft version and loader against the mod’s available files.

If the mod is compatible, it can be added to that profile. If the profile already contains the same mod, the app warns you about a duplicate. Continuing can override the existing version, which may remove a version that the pack author selected. Treat that warning as a decision point: keep the current file unless you have a specific reason to replace it, and make a backup or note the original version before testing.
Understand Minecraft-version and modloader compatibility
Compatibility determines both what CurseForge lets you install and whether Minecraft can launch after installation.
| Check | What must match | What happens when it does not |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft version | The mod must list the same Minecraft release targeted by the profile. | The mod cannot be installed into that profile, or it may fail during loading if an incompatible file is forced in. |
| Modloader | The mod must be built for the profile’s Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt loader. | CurseForge blocks the selection when it can identify the mismatch; a manually copied file can cause a loader or missing-dependency error. |
| Both values | Both the release and loader must be compatible at the same time. | If both differ, the profile may not be available for selection at all. |
| Duplicate content | The profile should contain one intentional version of each mod. | CurseForge warns that proceeding can override the existing version. |
The safest workflow is to choose the modpack first and then add only files whose listing names that pack’s Minecraft version and loader. Do not assume that a Forge file works in a Fabric profile or that a file for one release works in the next release.
Why a compatible-looking mod still may not work
A version and loader match is necessary, not a guarantee that every combination is stable. Mods can depend on other mods, conflict over the same game systems, or require a particular configuration. A pack author may also pin an older release because a newer upload changed behavior. When troubleshooting, first return to the pack’s intended versions before experimenting with updates.

| Decision factor | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft version | Does it match the release you need to play? | It controls which mods, worlds, and servers can be used together. |
| Modloader | Is it Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt? | Every installed mod must support that loader. |
| Gameplay goal | Is the pack focused on technology, magic, exploration, building, performance, or a light vanilla-style change? | The goal predicts the type of content and the amount of configuration you will need to learn. |
| Included content | Which mods, resource packs, maps, shaders, and configuration files are bundled? | Two packs with similar names may produce very different experiences. |
| Update cadence | Does the author maintain the pack, and how often are updates issued? | Frequent updates can add fixes but may also change a working setup; inactive packs may lag behind game releases. |
| Resource demand | What memory, graphics, or performance guidance does the author provide? | Shaders and large content collections can be more demanding than a small mod list. |
| Multiplayer requirements | Do all players need the exact same pack and version? Does the server use the same loader? | A client and server with different mods or versions commonly refuse connections. |
| Distribution method | Is it installed directly from CurseForge or imported as a file or code? | Imports add ZIP and manifest checks that direct installations do not. |
Choose how CurseForge launches Minecraft
Profiles can launch through the Classic/Mojang launcher, the Microsoft Store launcher, or CurseForge’s own launcher mode. In the standard handoff, CurseForge prepares the profile and passes control to the regular game launcher.
To bypass the standard launcher and use CurseForge launcher mode, sign in with a Microsoft/Minecraft account inside the app. If that mode fails, open Minecraft settings in CurseForge and switch back to the Mojang/Microsoft launcher. Changing the launcher mode does not change the profile’s mods; it changes how the game process is started.

Work from the least destructive checks to the most specific. Do not delete a profile before preserving its world saves and configuration files.
1. Run Repair Installation
Open the CurseForge app menu and choose Repair Installation. This is the first recovery action for common installation or launch failures because it checks and repairs app-managed components without requiring you to rebuild every profile manually.
2. Verify Java
CurseForge states that Java is required to run Minecraft modpacks. Confirm that Java is installed and current. An outdated Java installation can stop the game before the Minecraft window appears, produce an immediate launcher error, or cause a profile that worked previously to fail after another component was updated.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
3. Check the modding-folder location
On Windows, CurseForge’s guidance identifies several locations that can cause trouble: the desktop, a OneDrive-synchronized folder, the vanilla .minecraft directory, a root drive, or a path containing special characters. Move the modding folder to a normal local directory with a short, simple name, then ensure your account has permission to read and write it. Cloud synchronization and protected-folder security can lock files while the game is starting.

4. Inspect the profile’s mods
If a custom profile will not launch, remove or disable the most recently added mod and test again. Recheck every remaining mod’s Minecraft version and loader. A duplicate, an incorrect loader build, or a missing dependency can stop the loading sequence. For a published pack, compare your files with the pack’s intended release rather than updating individual mods at random.
5. Validate an imported ZIP
For an imported pack, open the ZIP with an archive utility and confirm that it is readable and contains manifest.json. If the archive is truncated or the manifest is absent, request a fresh export. Renaming a damaged file does not repair it.
6. Change the launcher mode
If the CurseForge launcher itself fails while the profile appears intact, switch to the Mojang/Microsoft launcher in Minecraft settings and try again. This separates a launcher-mode problem from a profile or mod problem.
7. Check firewall and antivirus interference
Launcher downloads can fail when firewall or antivirus rules block the app, Java, or the launcher. Temporarily review those rules and allow the legitimate CurseForge and Minecraft components through your security software according to your organization’s policy. Do not disable protection permanently; restore normal settings after testing.
8. Distinguish download, load, and world errors
- Download or install error: focus on network access, firewall rules, storage, permissions, and a valid import archive.
- Loader or dependency error: focus on Minecraft version, modloader, duplicate files, and required companion mods.
- Crash after the menu appears: focus on conflicting mods, shader or resource-pack settings, and the most recent profile change.
- One world fails while a new world works: preserve the affected save and investigate world-specific mod changes rather than reinstalling the entire app.
Keep profiles stable over time
Use separate profiles for separate experiments. A test profile lets you try a new mod or loader update without changing a world you care about. Before updating a pack, copy important saves and note the current profile version. If an update introduces a crash, you can return to the previous profile instead of trying to reconstruct it from memory.
For multiplayer, every participant should use the same pack release, Minecraft version, loader, and compatible configuration. Local CurseForge play does not require a hosted server; hosting is a separate deployment choice. If a server administrator supplies an exported pack, import that exact package rather than building a similar list by hand.
Quick reference
- Install the CurseForge app and select Minecraft.
- Browse Modpacks, filter by Minecraft version and loader, and click Install.
- Launch from My Modpacks with Play.
- For your own collection, use Create, then Add More Content.
- Before adding anything, confirm both the Minecraft version and modloader.
- For failures, run Repair Installation, update Java, verify folder permissions and location, validate imported
manifest.jsonfiles, and try the Mojang/Microsoft launcher if necessary.
Once those checks become part of your routine, CurseForge is less a one-click installer than a controlled way to keep multiple Java Edition instances separate, reproducible, and easier to repair.
