Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Credential stuffing is an automated attempt to break into accounts by trying usernames and passwords exposed from one service on other services. It succeeds when people reuse passwords. The most effective personal defenses are a unique password for every account and multi-factor authentication (MFA), especially on email, financial, and other high-impact accounts.
How credential stuffing works
An attacker obtains username-and-password pairs from a data breach, phishing, or a credential dump, then uses automated software to submit those known pairs to login forms on other services. If you reused a pair, it may work elsewhere. A successful login can expose personal information, private messages, documents, or payment data; it can also enable purchases or let an attacker send spam or phishing messages from your account. OWASP describes credential stuffing as an attack against reused credentials.

How it differs from other password attacks
The methods can have similar consequences, but they use different strategies:
Recommended Free Tools
| Attack | What the attacker tries |
|---|---|
| Credential stuffing | Previously exposed username-and-password pairs, tested against other services. |
| Brute force | Multiple possible passwords in an effort to find a match. |
| Password spraying | A small set of common passwords across many accounts. |
These distinctions matter because a strong password does not protect an account if that same password has already been exposed and reused. Cloudflare’s explainer also describes how attackers automate login attempts with known credentials.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
How to protect your accounts
Give every service a different password
Use a unique password for each account. That breaks the reuse condition credential stuffing depends on: an exposed password for one service should not unlock another. A password manager can help generate and keep track of unique passwords, but it is a convenience, not a prerequisite.
Enable MFA, prioritizing important accounts
Turn on MFA wherever a service offers it. Prioritize email, financial accounts, and accounts that could expose sensitive information or help reset other passwords. MFA requires a second factor in addition to the password, so a stolen password alone may not be enough to sign in. The FTC advises that when text or email codes are the only option, using one is better than having no second factor. Read the FTC’s consumer guidance on two-factor authentication.

- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
- Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
A FIDO2 security key is one optional physical MFA method, but it works only where the service and your devices support it. Check compatibility before choosing a key.

- Change the password on the affected service. Choose a new password you do not use anywhere else.
- Change that password on every other account where you reused it. Give each account its own password.
- Enable MFA on those accounts wherever available.
- Review the affected service’s account activity and recovery settings. Use its account-security page for service-specific controls and instructions.
The FTC’s guidance on responding to compromised personal information includes advice for taking action after exposure. A report that credentials were exposed does not, by itself, establish that someone has accessed your account; act promptly, then check the provider’s activity information.

What services can do to reduce credential stuffing
For organizations, defenses work best in layers rather than relying on one challenge. OWASP recommends combining MFA with monitoring, automated-login detection, and risk-based step-up checks. Signals can include a new device or location and login activity that suggests scripted traffic. CAPTCHA may slow or identify some attempts, but it is not a complete defense; client-side techniques such as device fingerprinting and JavaScript challenges can be spoofed or bypassed. OWASP’s guidance on blocking brute-force attacks discusses these layered controls. CISA’s administrator guidance on MFA explains that MFA can prevent account takeover when an attacker lacks the second factor.
