Start by confirming your child is using a supervised Google Account on a supported Android or ChromeOS device. Then review time limits and schedules, app access and activity, location, web and Play filters, and purchase approvals. Family Link does not cover every device or every route to content and purchases, so each control has a specific scope.
Confirm the account and device are supervised
Family Link manages a child’s Google Account and some settings on supported devices; it should not be treated as a universal control over every device or Google service. Google says most supervision settings do not work when a child signs into Google apps on an iPhone or iPad. That includes screen-time limits, device location, app activity and blocking, app permissions, and Chrome website and permission restrictions. Family Link also cannot remotely view a child’s screen or listen to phone calls. Set expectations accordingly: it provides selected account and device controls, not a live window into the phone.

Daily limits and app limits
Review the daily device limit alongside limits for individual apps. Check which apps are marked unlimited: an unlimited app can remain available after the daily limit is reached. App limits apply across a child’s Android and ChromeOS devices, but cannot be set for system apps. Google lists app limits as supported on Android 7 and later, and ChromeOS 83 and later. Downtime and School time
Check the days and start and end times for each schedule, then decide which apps should remain available. During Downtime, calls remain available. During School time, children can call and text, but notifications such as calls and texts are silenced. Google lists Downtime and School time for Android 7 and later; read Google’s schedule-setting guidance for current controls.
Review app activity, approvals, and permissions
Use app activity to understand which apps are being used, and review requests to approve or block apps. The activity figure is not a measure of all background activity: Google counts time while an app is open and displayed on screen, not while it runs in the background. Review app permissions separately from app approval. Allowing an app to be installed does not, by itself, answer whether its access to device features or data is appropriate. The controls available depend on the child’s account and device.
Check location and account data settings
Family Link can show the location of a supervised Android device. Review whether location is enabled and whether the device is the one your family expects to locate. Parents can also manage some account settings related to Google’s collection and processing of data, including Search or Location History settings. These controls are not equivalent to location visibility on every platform; Google’s Family Link overview explains the broader supervision scope.

Review Chrome, Search, and Google Play content controls
Check Chrome site access and permissions, SafeSearch, and Google Play content restrictions. Treat filters as guardrails rather than complete barriers: restricted Play items may still appear in search results or be reached through a direct link, and apps downloaded previously may remain accessible. Google advises checking that content restrictions are correct after changing them. Restrictions and availability can vary by country, content type, account setup, and Android version. Choose the approval level that fits your family, such as approval for all content, paid content, or in-app purchases, or no approval, where those options are offered. Crucially, Google Play purchase approvals apply only to transactions processed through Google Play’s billing system; they do not cover purchases handled through another billing system. A practical review order
- Verify coverage: confirm the child’s account is supervised and identify the device and operating system in use.
- Set time controls: review daily and app limits, unlimited apps, Downtime, and School time.
- Check app access: inspect activity, approval requests, blocking, and permissions.
- Review visibility: confirm location settings and relevant account data controls.
- Check content and spending: review Chrome and Search filters, Play content restrictions, and the scope of purchase approvals.
- Recheck behavior: after changing a restriction, verify it on the child’s device and account. Do not assume a filter blocks access through every route.
