CMAF (Common Media Application Format) is a standardized way to package segmented audio and video so that delivery systems can present the media through HLS, DASH, or both. It defines the media objects and their organization; HLS and DASH define how a presentation is described and delivered. CMAF can be part of a low-latency workflow, but it does not guarantee low latency or universal player compatibility by itself.
What CMAF contains
A CMAF track stores encoded media samples in a container derived from ISO Base Media File Format (ISO BMFF). Apple describes the track as having a CMAF header and one or more CMAF fragments. The header carries initialization information for the track; fragments contain the media samples. A segment is one or more consecutive fragments from the same track, while a chunk is a sequential subset of samples within a fragment. A complete track may also be represented in a single ISO BMFF track file. Apple’s CMAF overview explains these relationships.

Tracks and switching sets
For adaptive streaming, a service can provide alternative encodings—for example, different bitrates or resolutions—organized into switching sets. When the alternatives are aligned, a player can switch tracks at fragment boundaries without losing the presentation timeline. Selection sets can group choices such as language tracks or camera angles; synchronized selection sets together form a presentation.

A common live workflow begins with an encoder receiving a live audiovisual source and producing multiple bitrate tracks. The encoder or packaging system aligns their switching points and packages them as CMAF tracks. From there, the media can reach delivery in more than one way, as described by the DASH-IF Live Media Ingest Protocol.

Ingest to an active packager
A CMAF Ingest interface can send tracks to an active packager. Depending on the workflow, the packager may package, encrypt, transcode, stitch, or otherwise process the media, then generate HLS playlists, a DASH Media Presentation Description (MPD), or both. The resulting presentation is delivered to an origin or content delivery network (CDN).
Ingest a complete presentation
Alternatively, an encoder can send already-packaged HLS or DASH manifests and media objects to a passive destination, such as an origin, cloud storage, or a CDN. This approach assumes the destination can accept the packaged presentation rather than needing to perform the active processing described above.

Alignment, synchronization, and failover
DASH-IF’s example workflow recommends constant-duration segments, aligned audio and video boundaries, and timing relative to a shared anchor to help keep tracks synchronized. It also describes redundant live sources and failover behavior. These are workflow recommendations in that specification, not mandatory settings for every CMAF deployment; the right choices depend on the encoder, packager, destination, and service requirements.

CMAF is the media format and object model; HLS and DASH are presentation and delivery specifications that can use it. Their manifests still describe presentation-specific information, even when they point to common media objects. Apple notes that HLS playlists and a DASH MPD can share the same CMAF Addressable Objects, which can allow more efficient caching across platforms. MPEG describes DASH as a standard for streaming over existing HTTP infrastructure for both live and on-demand delivery, and lists a part addressing DASH delivery of CMAF content.

Sharing media objects does not make every client combination interchangeable. Codec, encryption profile, subtitle format, and CMAF feature support still matter, and HLS support can depend on client revision. Apple identifies unencrypted, cbcs, and cenc CMAF presentation profiles; its overview says HLS supports unencrypted and cbcs and notes a subtitle limitation. Confirm the requirements of the target players and the content profile rather than assuming that a shared CMAF asset will work identically everywhere. Apple’s compatibility notes are at its CMAF overview.
Does CMAF make a live stream low-latency?
No—not on its own. CMAF can be used in low-latency workflows, but latency depends on how the encoder produces and publishes media, how segments or chunks are made available, how manifests are updated, how the origin or CDN delivers them, and how the player requests and renders them. A slow or incompatible component can undermine the intended result. The DASH-IF ingest examples describe low-latency CMAF workflows, while Apple’s HLS authoring specification gives separate low-latency authoring requirements. Neither makes one latency figure universal across implementations.

Choosing a CMAF live workflow
The practical decision is less about choosing CMAF versus HLS or DASH than about deciding how the media should be packaged and delivered, and which clients must play it.
- Destination processing: Decide whether the destination needs an active packager to process tracks and create presentations, or can accept complete HLS/DASH manifests and media objects.
- HLS and DASH delivery: Check whether the target clients need both presentations and whether your workflow can serve them from shared CMAF media objects.
- Track alignment: Ensure alternative encodings have aligned timelines and switching points suited to the player and packaging workflow.
- Compatibility: Verify codec, encryption, subtitles, and player support for the exact target devices and content profile.
- Resilience: Specify synchronization and source-failover behavior where the service needs redundancy; do not assume the format alone supplies it.
Current CMAF standard status
CMAF is MPEG-A Part 19, ISO/IEC 23000-19. MPEG’s CMAF standards page lists editions one through three as published or released and edition four as ongoing; the page lists a fourth-edition committee-draft text dated 2026-08-24. Edition four should therefore be described as in progress, not as a published edition.
