Cloud streaming runs an application or game on remote computers and sends its audio and video to your device. For interactive services, your inputs travel back to the remote system so it can respond. A streaming proxy may help authenticate and route the connection, but it does not necessarily carry the video or game data itself.
What is cloud streaming?
Cloud streaming moves the work of running an application or rendering a game from your local device to remote infrastructure. The remote system produces audio and video, encodes them, and sends them over a network for your device to decode and display.
In interactive cloud streaming, the connection works in both directions: your inputs go to the remote application, and its updated output comes back. In ordinary video-on-demand, by contrast, playback does not require the remote source to respond to each action with newly rendered frames.
Cloud gaming is one example. Microsoft distinguishes Xbox Game Streaming, where the game runs on an Xbox server in an Azure datacenter, from Xbox Remote Play, where it runs on the user’s own Xbox console. Microsoft’s overview of Xbox game streaming describes that difference.

How does cloud gaming work?
A simplified interactive flow is:
- You press a control on your device.
- Your input travels over the network to the remote application or game.
- The remote system processes the input and renders the next image and sound.
- It encodes the resulting media and sends it back over the network.
- Your device decodes and displays the media.
Each stage contributes to the time between an action and its visible response. Meta’s engineering account of its cloud-gaming infrastructure explains this cumulative path and describes engineering approaches used in its own system, including edge locations, GPU encoding, and client hardware decoding. Those examples do not set a universal latency target or guarantee a particular experience. Meta Engineering’s cloud gaming infrastructure overview.
How does a streaming proxy work?
A proxy can serve as a public-facing point for connection setup. In NVIDIA’s CloudXR reference design, the client opens a secure WebSocket connection to a proxy. The proxy can authenticate signaling headers, select an available GPU-backed server, and forward the signaling connection. After the server accepts the session and ICE negotiates the media path, audio, video, and input can flow directly between client and server rather than through the proxy. NVIDIA’s CloudXR deployment documentation describes this specific design; other systems may use different architectures.

- More Reliable Coverage: Achieve the strongest, most reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX3000 as it focuses signal strength to your devices using Beamforming technology and 4 antennas.
Signaling versus media
Signaling carries the information needed to establish and manage a session. Media is the high-volume audio, video, and interactive traffic. A proxy can therefore be essential for authentication and routing without being in the media path. Whether media passes through a proxy or uses a separately negotiated path depends on the system’s design.
Possible proxy implementations
NVIDIA’s reference identifies a dedicated service, an API gateway, or a WebSocket-capable load balancer as possibilities. It lists HAProxy, nginx, Envoy, and custom WebSocket applications as examples—not as universal recommendations. The suitable choice depends on the application, infrastructure, and operational requirements.

How NAT, reachability, and security affect the connection
Reachability and ICE
When a server is behind cloud NAT or lacks a media address the client can reach directly, NVIDIA’s reference calls for ICE and says to configure STUN to help discover a public-facing media candidate. STUN applies in the described setup when ICE is enabled. If a network blocks the negotiated UDP media traffic, allowlisting, forwarding, or a deployment-specific relay strategy may be needed. A signaling proxy by itself does not guarantee that media can connect.
Security responsibilities
NVIDIA recommends a trusted, CA-signed HTTPS certificate for the public-facing secure WebSocket connection. Its reference also describes checking credentials in WebSocket upgrade headers, keeping server instances behind a firewall, and controlling access as sessions are established. How authentication and encryption are handled between proxy and server is a deployment decision; these recommendations are not a complete security standard.

What affects cloud streaming latency and quality?
Responsiveness depends on the whole path: input transit, remote processing and rendering, encoding, return-network transit, decoding, and display. A proxy can influence connection setup, but it cannot by itself eliminate delays elsewhere in the system.
When comparing designs, consider where GPU resources sit relative to users, which network paths and traffic types must be allowed, whether the proxy carries media or signaling only, how authentication and backend selection work, how ICE, STUN, or relays handle reachability, and who manages certificates and proxy-to-server protection. These are design questions, not a single set of settings that fits every application.

Cloud streaming is not the same as a 24/7 YouTube video stream
Cloud gaming interactively runs an application remotely and returns its changing output in response to user inputs. A pre-recorded video stream is different: it plays uploaded video as a live broadcast and does not render a game or respond to gameplay controls.
For that separate use case, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings or playlists. It is not a gaming proxy or a camera-streaming service. For Indian creators, UPI works; card checkout is available worldwide.
