Then inspect the platform preview and confirm what viewers will actually see and hear. A few minutes of testing with the real content can catch problems before the audience arrives.
Before the event: confirm you can go live
Check platform eligibility
Requirements differ by service and can change, so check the current rules for the platform you plan to use. For YouTube, its current live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, live streaming must be enabled, and the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming and describes special provisions for younger participants; check YouTube’s rules directly if a minor will appear or participate. Confirm the event and destination
Open the scheduled event and verify its title, visibility, category or other relevant details, and the destination selected in your streaming app or encoder. Make sure the event is accessible from the channel or watch page as intended, and check it on a phone as well as a computer. YouTube recommends trying a test live stream and checking event accessibility and mobile playback in its live-streaming tips.

Check your connection and streaming settings
Choose stability over maximum quality
Run an upload-speed test near the time and place you will stream. Account for other devices and applications using upload bandwidth. Twitch’s general guidance is to have upload speed at least 30% above your stream bitrate; its example says a 6 Mbps stream may need at least 8 Mbps upload. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. YouTube likewise advises choosing settings that are reliable for the connection available. If the connection fluctuates, lower the bitrate or resolution rather than pushing settings that cause dropped frames or buffering. Check the encoder connection and protect the key
Confirm your encoder or streaming app is connected to the account and event you intend to use. A stream key authorizes an encoder to broadcast to an account, so treat it as a secret: do not share it, display it on stream, include it in a screenshot, or place it in an overlay. Twitch Help says, “Never share your stream key with anyone. Don’t show your stream key on stream!” If you think a Twitch key was exposed, reset it through Twitch’s stream settings before broadcasting. Twitch stream key FAQ.
Rehearse with the real content
Run a short test
Use the same microphone, game or screen capture, movements, and audio sources you expect to use during the actual broadcast. YouTube recommends a test live stream, and OBS recommends doing a short test rather than making your first run the public stream. Where the platform permits, use an unlisted or private test event; otherwise, make a local recording to inspect. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifically recommends including audio and movement representative of the planned stream. Listen to the entire mix
Review the recording or test playback with headphones. Check that speech is clear, game or desktop sound is at a sensible level, all intended sources are present, and the audio stays synchronized with the picture. OBS’s default setup captures desktop audio and a microphone, but do not assume your particular scene or device configuration is correct. An existing headset or device microphone may be enough; consider a USB microphone only if a specific audio problem remains or you want a deliberate upgrade. A camera, microphone, capture card, and expensive lighting are not universal prerequisites to start streaming.

Inspect the preview
For an encoder stream on YouTube, check the Live Control Room preview before starting. Confirm the intended camera, screen, or game is visible, framing is readable, and private information or unrelated desktop windows are not exposed. Check the event’s visibility and make sure you are looking at the correct scheduled stream, not another event. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover previewing and event checks.
Verify what viewers can access
Open the actual event page or channel view and confirm it is available to the intended audience. If the stream is planned as a production with backup or recording workflows, check that those behave as expected before relying on them. For YouTube event workflows, also verify mobile access and the integrity of any archive file you plan to keep.

Choose the simplest workflow that fits
A mobile stream can suit a quick update; webcam streaming can work for a straightforward computer-based broadcast; an encoder is more appropriate when you need overlays, screen or gameplay capture, or multiple production sources. Compare the workflow against your available connection, ability to rehearse and inspect a preview, and comfort with setup complexity. YouTube describes mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming options. Start with the least complicated option that meets the event’s needs.

Keep monitoring after launch
Once live, continue checking audio and video quality rather than assuming a successful preview guarantees a trouble-free broadcast. If viewers report stuttering or buffering, inspect the platform’s stream-health information; Twitch points streamers to its Inspector and health tools for diagnosing stream issues. Check whether upload capacity is being consumed elsewhere and reduce the stream settings if necessary. YouTube also advises continuous monitoring of audio and video quality. Common pre-stream problems and fixes
- The event is missing or unavailable: Confirm live-streaming eligibility, the scheduled event, its visibility, and the account selected in the encoder. For YouTube, check verification, enabled live streaming, and any recent restriction.
- The wrong content appears in preview: Select the intended scene or capture source, then check the preview again. Close private or irrelevant windows before sharing the screen.
- Audio is missing or hard to understand: Confirm the correct microphone and desktop/game sources are selected, inspect levels, and listen to a rehearsal recording with headphones.
- The stream buffers or stutters: Check upload use by other devices, test the connection, and lower bitrate or resolution until the connection is reliable. Twitch’s 30%-above-bitrate suggestion is a general guideline, not a substitute for testing.
- The encoder connects to the wrong channel or event: Verify the signed-in account, destination, and event before starting. Do not paste a stream key into a public post or expose it during setup.
- A stream key may have leaked: Reset the key in the platform’s stream settings before broadcasting again.
