Clean HDMI is a camera’s live video sent over HDMI without the camera’s own menus and status graphics—such as battery, recording, or exposure indicators—on top of the picture. It matters when you use a camera as a streaming source because anything embedded in that HDMI feed can appear in the stream. An HDMI port alone does not guarantee clean output; support and settings vary by camera model.
What clean HDMI does—and what it does not do
Panasonic describes clean HDMI as video transmission without the camera’s onscreen data indicators. A feed that includes those graphics is often called a “dirty” feed: the information is part of the picture, so a capture card cannot simply remove it. Check whether your camera supports clean output and whether its HDMI information display can be disabled. Panasonic’s camera streaming compatibility information distinguishes models with clean output from models whose interface remains visible through a capture card.

Clean HDMI describes the absence of camera overlays; it does not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate, image quality, latency, autofocus behavior, audio path, or continuous runtime. Those depend on the camera, capture device, settings, computer, and software. Nikon also uses clean HDMI in connection with sending uncompressed movie data to external devices such as monitors, recorders, and capture cards, but verify the signal and supported formats for your specific setup. Nikon’s HDMI output guidance lists compatible models and setup controls.

How a camera HDMI streaming setup works
A common arrangement sends the camera’s HDMI output to an HDMI capture device, then connects that device to the computer by USB. Streaming or video software can select the capture device as its camera source. Sony documents this workflow for supported Alpha and DSC cameras. Sony’s HDMI livestream setup guide

- H.264/MJPEG/YUY2 compression format optional
- Confirm the camera’s live HDMI output. Check the camera’s manual or manufacturer compatibility information for your exact model. Make sure it can output a live-view signal suitable for the intended session.
- Match the connections. Connect camera HDMI out to the capture device’s HDMI input. Choose a cable with connector ends that fit those two devices; camera HDMI connectors are not all the same size.
- Connect the capture device to the computer. Use its USB connection, then open your streaming software and select the capture device as the video source.
- Set a compatible format. Check which HDMI resolution and frame rate the camera outputs and which the capture device accepts. NZXT cites 1080p or 720p at 60 frames per second as common capture formats, not as a guarantee for every camera and capture card. NZXT’s capture setup guidance
- Remove camera graphics if needed. If menus or status information appear, find the camera’s HDMI information-display or live-view display setting and turn it off, if available.
- Plan for power and duration. Check whether the camera can remain on for the length of the stream, whether it needs external power, and what its manufacturer says about heat during extended use.
Check compatibility before buying a capture card
Do not treat the presence of an HDMI connector as proof of clean live output. Look up the exact camera model in its manufacturer’s documentation, and confirm all the parts of the signal path before purchasing equipment.
- Clean output: Does the camera provide live HDMI without overlays, or can its HDMI information display be turned off?
- Signal format: What resolution and frame rate does the camera output in live view, and does the capture device accept them?
- Capture compatibility: Does the chosen capture device support the camera’s signal and connect appropriately to the computer and software?
- Long-session readiness: Can the camera run for the intended duration? Check heat warnings and power options in the camera documentation.
- Cables: Do the cable’s HDMI connector sizes match the camera and capture device?
Manufacturer compatibility pages are more useful than general statements about a camera line: Panasonic lists both clean-output and interface-overlay cases, while Nikon identifies models that output uncompressed movie data over HDMI. Elgato likewise says a compatible camera needs clean HDMI for Cam Link 4K to receive a clean camera picture. Elgato Cam Link 4K product information

Troubleshooting a camera HDMI feed
The camera menu or status icons are visible
Look for a setting such as HDMI Info Display or HDMI live-view on-screen display and turn it off. If the camera does not offer clean output, a capture card will not remove graphics already embedded in the signal; check the model’s documentation before trying other equipment.
The capture device shows no picture
Confirm the camera is outputting live video, the HDMI cable is connected from camera output to capture-device input, and the capture device is selected in the streaming software. Then check that the camera’s resolution and frame rate are accepted by the capture device.

The picture is unstable or not in the expected format
Compare the camera’s current HDMI output format with the capture device’s supported inputs. Try an output setting both devices support, using the camera and capture-device manuals; there is no single resolution or frame rate that applies to every combination.

Alternatives to the HDMI capture path
Some cameras support USB webcam use or a manufacturer’s webcam or direct-streaming feature. These can avoid the HDMI capture-card path, but availability and quality vary by model; check the relevant camera documentation. Panasonic’s compatibility information distinguishes capture-card compatibility from direct streaming. Neither alternative should be assumed to provide the same controls or signal quality as another camera’s HDMI workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
