Long-press the navigation handle or Home button, select text or an image by circling, highlighting, scribbling, or tapping it, and Google Search shows results over the screen.
What Circle to Search does
Instead of taking a screenshot and switching to a separate search, you select visible screen content and ask Google about it in place. It can help identify an object in a photo or video, find similar products, or translate text. Availability varies by phone and feature; Circle to Search is not a separate app you need to download. Google’s Android page explains the feature, while its help page documents supported uses and setup.

How to use Circle to Search
- On a supported Android phone, touch and hold the Home button or the navigation handle at the bottom of the screen.
- When the screen-selection interface appears, circle, highlight, scribble over, or tap the text or image you want to search.
- Review the Google Search results while staying in the original app. Swipe down or use the back gesture to return to the screen.
For a follow-up that combines what you selected with a typed question, use Google’s multisearch options when they appear. For example, select an item in an image and ask a question about it. Google describes these visual-search and translation uses in its Circle to Search announcement.

- Identify or learn about something: Select an object in an image or video to look for information about it.
- Find similar products: Select an item on screen to see visual-search results.
- Translate screen content: On supported content, Circle to Search can translate text without requiring you to copy it into another app. Google says scrolling translation works on most content such as web pages, messages, and social media, but not videos or GIFs. Google’s help page describes this limitation.
- Recognize contact details and links: In a January 2025 announcement, Google introduced one-tap recognition for phone numbers, email addresses, and URLs, alongside AI Overviews for more visual-search results. Whether a function is available depends on the device and rollout. Google’s January 2025 update covers those changes.
- Search multiple outfit items: On February 25, 2026, Google announced multi-object visual search that can identify multiple pieces of an outfit from one image. Google said the feature was starting on Samsung Galaxy S26 series and Pixel 10 devices, with more Android devices to follow; that announcement is not a guarantee of availability on every Android phone. Google’s announcement attributes the experience to Gemini 3 planning, reasoning, and tool capabilities.
Is Circle to Search available on your phone?
There is no single device list that applies to every Circle to Search function. Core screen search, translation, outfit search, and virtual try-on can have different device, rollout, regional, account, and content requirements. Check Google’s current support information for your phone and the specific function you want to use.

For example, Google’s documented outfit-finding and virtual try-on steps name Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Pixel 10a, and the Pixel 11 family. That list applies to those documented features, not necessarily to basic Circle to Search. Google says virtual try-on is for logged-in users aged 18 or older in Australia, Canada, India, Japan, the UK, and the US, with account history and personalized recommendations enabled. It excludes lingerie, swimming costumes, and accessories, and does not work on sponsored Shopping ads. See Google’s help page for current details.
Why it may not work
- The phone or function may not be eligible: A phone that supports one Circle to Search capability may not support every newer feature.
- The app or content may be restricted: Google says the feature may not work in some apps, including banking, medical, and other confidential apps. Scrolling translation does not work on videos or GIFs. Google lists these limitations.
- The activation gesture or settings may need attention: Google’s troubleshooting steps include setting Google as the default digital assistant, enabling screen and app data, and updating the Google app. Its help page also explains how to turn Circle to Search off. Use Google’s setup and troubleshooting instructions for the relevant settings.
What happens to the screen content?
Google’s account of the design process says it consulted outside privacy and human-computer interaction experts and designed device-level access to use only the data needed to provide information. These are Google’s descriptions, not an independent privacy audit. In a March 18, 2025 interview, Google Director for Trust Bill Fusz said, “People’s expectations change. And as that happens, we want to make sure our approach to safety and privacy is also evolving and staying ahead of those expectations.” The interview also includes comments from Senior Product Manager for Search Mary Minno Ioannidis.

Google announced Circle to Search on January 17, 2024, saying it would begin a global rollout on January 31 to select premium Android phones, starting with Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S24 devices. That describes the launch, not the current eligibility list. Google’s original announcement provides the dated launch details.
