What Is Chromatic Aberration, and Why Do Games Use It?

Chromatic aberration imitates or stylizes color fringing from camera lenses. Here’s why games use it, how it can affect clarity, and whether you can turn it off.

Chromatic aberration is color fringing that can appear when an optical system fails to bring different colors to the same point. In games, it is usually a post-processing effect that imitates or stylizes that camera-lens artifact. Developers can use it to give the image a camera-like look or to mark a moment such as an impact or intoxication effect; stronger settings can also blur parts or all of the scene.

What chromatic aberration looks like

In photography, chromatic aberration occurs when a lens does not focus all colors at the same image point. It can show up as colored fringes around high-contrast edges—for example, where a dark shape meets a bright background. Unity’s 2019.3 manual describes red/blue or green/purple fringing and notes that the fringing colors can be customized in that implementation: Unity Manual: Chromatic Aberration.

In a game, the effect is a rendering choice applied to the image. Unity’s Post Processing package 3.2.2 describes separating red, green and blue channels along image boundaries, while Unreal Engine describes simulating color shifts associated with real-world camera lenses. It does not mean the player’s display or eyesight has an optical defect.

Why developers use it

To make the image feel camera-mediated

A game may use color shifts to evoke the look of footage captured through a lens rather than an entirely clean digital image. Unreal Engine documentation characterizes its effect as a simulation of lens-related color shifts: Epic Games: Post Process Effects in Unreal Engine.

To emphasize a moment or mood

Unity’s 2019.3 manual names camera impact and intoxication as examples of artistic uses. In those contexts, fringing can make an image feel disrupted or stylized. These are documented examples, not a rule that all games use the effect for the same reason.

To alter clarity as well as color

The effect is not always limited to a thin fringe. Epic’s Fortnite documentation says that, depending on the amount used in a post-process volume, blurring may occur around scene edges or throughout the scene: Epic Games: Chromatic aberration. The visual result therefore depends on both strength and how broadly the effect is applied.

What the controls mean—and what they do not

Unreal Engine exposes implementation properties called Intensity, which controls the amount of simulated aberration, and Start Offset, which controls where in the framebuffer the effect begins. Unity’s Post Processing package 3.2.2 also documents a faster variant. These are engine-level features, not evidence that a specific released game gives players the same controls.

To change the effect while playing, check that game’s graphics, display, accessibility or post-processing settings for a chromatic aberration option. Availability and naming are title-specific. If no setting is offered, the cited engine documentation does not establish a universal player-side workaround.

How to judge whether it is helping or distracting

  • Strength: Subtle edge fringing may be less conspicuous; stronger separation can make colors visibly split and, as Epic notes, can introduce blur.
  • Coverage: The effect may concentrate near image boundaries or extend more broadly. Unreal’s Start Offset is one engine control related to where it begins.
  • Context: A brief impact or intoxication cue is different from a persistent camera style. Unity documents the former as possible artistic uses.
  • Player control: Whether you can switch it off depends on the individual game, not simply on the engine used to build it.

There is no single correct preference: if the fringing or blur makes the picture harder to read or less comfortable for you, try disabling or reducing it if the game provides a setting. If not, the available documentation does not establish a setting that works across games.
