For one continuous YouTube stream, a VPS is likely cheaper in the cited examples—if its included outbound transfer and CPU capacity fit your stream. DigitalOcean lists VPS plans at $12/month with 2,000 GiB of transfer and $24/month with 4,000 GiB; a Hetzner dedicated-server example is $117.10/month plus a $59 setup fee, excluding VAT. These are provider-specific figures, not a market-wide price survey. The decisive step is to calculate your stream’s monthly data use and compare it with the server’s bandwidth allowance, overage charges, and compute capability.
Why bandwidth can matter more than the server’s headline price
A server sending a live feed to YouTube transmits data continuously. The monthly transfer allowance can therefore determine the real cost, even when the server’s rental price looks low. The stream’s encoder bitrate is the key input: YouTube recommends H.264 video at 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. YouTube’s live encoder guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. YouTube handles transcoding into multiple viewer formats; that viewer delivery is separate from the outbound feed your server sends to YouTube.

For an illustrative 30-day month at a constant bitrate, 10 Mbps uses about 3,240 GB decimal, or 3,017 GiB; 12 Mbps uses about 3,888 GB decimal, or 3,619 GiB. These are arithmetic estimates, not hosting quotes, and exclude protocol overhead. Variable bitrate, network overhead, and other transfers on the account can raise actual usage.
Estimate your own transfer
- Find the outgoing video bitrate in your encoder settings, in megabits per second (Mbps).
- Multiply Mbps by the total seconds in the billing period, then divide by eight to convert megabits to megabytes. For 30 days, use 2,592,000 seconds.
- Convert the result to the provider’s unit. Decimal GB and binary GiB are not interchangeable; the examples above state both.
- Add a margin for overhead and bitrate variation, then compare the estimate with included outbound transfer and any overage rate.
YouTube recommends testing the connection before going live and monitoring stream health during the stream. A speed test can help assess whether the server’s network can sustain the chosen output rate, but it does not replace checking the host’s transfer billing terms.

Illustrative VPS and dedicated-server costs
The examples below use published provider figures. They differ in plan details, region, tax treatment, and billing terms, so they are useful for understanding the cost structure rather than declaring a universal winner.
| Option | Published price | Transfer information | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean entry VPS | $4/month | 500 GiB | Also listed with 512 MiB RAM and 1 vCPU; not enough transfer for either illustrative 1080p stream for a full 30-day month. DigitalOcean plan pricing. |
| DigitalOcean VPS | $12/month | 2,000 GiB | Below the estimated 30-day transfer for both 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps examples. |
| DigitalOcean VPS | $24/month | 4,000 GiB | Covers the illustrative 12 Mbps transfer estimate on bandwidth arithmetic alone, before overhead or other account usage. |
| Hetzner AX42-1 dedicated server | $117.10/month plus $59 setup | Not stated in the cited price-adjustment notice | Listed for Falkenstein and Helsinki, excluding VAT, under an adjustment effective 15 June 2026. This is one model and regional price example, not a price for all dedicated servers. Hetzner’s price-adjustment notice. |
DigitalOcean describes a Droplet as its brand name for a VPS. Its published plan pricing includes the transfer figures shown above; its billing documentation says additional outbound Droplet transfer costs $0.01/GiB, inbound transfer is free, and transfer allowance is pooled across a team’s Droplets. - Secure private cloud - Enjoy 100% data ownership and multi-platform access from anywhere
- Easy sharing and syncing - Safely access and share files and media from anywhere, and keep clients, colleagues and collaborators on the same page
- Automated Backup Protection - Set-and-forget backups for Macs, PCs and mobile devices to multiple destinations including cloud and external drives
- Home Security System - Record and monitor your property 24/7 with support for multiple IP cameras and remote viewing
- 2-Year Warranty - Reliable hardware backed by Synology's expert customer support team and ongoing software updates
On the stated examples, the $24 VPS plan is a plausible fit for one steady 12 Mbps feed by transfer volume, whereas the cited dedicated server costs considerably more. That does not establish whether the VPS can perform the required encoding or transcoding: bandwidth fit and compute fit are separate questions.
How to choose the right server type
Choose a VPS when the workload and allowance fit
- Your workflow can run on a virtual machine with the available CPU and memory.
- The included outbound transfer, after accounting for other team usage, covers your estimated stream volume or the overage remains acceptable.
- The plan’s price, region, currency, tax, and billing terms work for your circumstances.
VPS plans may use shared or dedicated CPU resources. DigitalOcean distinguishes shared CPU and dedicated CPU Droplets; a low-cost plan should not be assumed to encode or transcode a particular source reliably without workload-specific sizing or testing. DigitalOcean’s plan guidance.

Consider a dedicated server when the workload justifies it
A dedicated server may become more plausible if your workload needs more compute, or if a provider’s total price and bandwidth terms change the comparison. The cited Hetzner figure alone is not enough to determine value: check the exact server configuration, transfer terms, setup fee, location, taxes, and billing conditions against your workload.
