What Is Bitrate for YouTube Live Streaming? Recommended Settings

YouTube’s live bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Learn the recommended H.264 settings and how to check bandwidth and stream health.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For YouTube Live, set bitrate to match the codec, resolution, and frame rate your encoder sends. YouTube Help currently recommends H.264 video at 14 Mbps for 1080p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60, and 8 Mbps for either 720p30 or 720p60. Your upload connection must sustain the stream with headroom; there is no single bitrate that fits every live stream.

Recommended H.264 bitrates for common YouTube Live formats

These are YouTube Help’s current recommended H.264 video bitrates for live ingestion, accessed October 3, 2026. They are recommendations, not guarantees that a particular internet connection can sustain them.

Resolution and frame rate Recommended H.264 video bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

YouTube also lists minimum H.264 settings, which are lower than its recommended targets. For example, the minimum is 6 Mbps for 1080p60 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. Do not treat a minimum as the recommended setting. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the matching codec and format details.

How to choose the right bitrate

  1. Check what your encoder is sending. In your streaming software or hardware encoder, identify the video codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s recommendations are based on the incoming format.
  2. Use the recommendation for that codec. The figures above apply to H.264. YouTube has separate recommendation columns for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; do not copy an H.264 value to a different codec. Consult the relevant column in YouTube’s settings table.
  3. Confirm your upload capacity. The selected video bitrate is not the only traffic your connection carries. YouTube advises keeping the total stream bitrate within available outbound bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. If you send a backup stream, account for both the primary and backup stream, plus that headroom, as described in YouTube’s streaming tips.
  4. Test the actual stream setup. Before going live, run a test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and the live session.

Encoder settings that affect a YouTube Live stream

  • Rate control: YouTube lists CBR (constant bitrate) as the live bitrate encoding mode.
  • Keyframe interval: Use two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Supported live codecs: YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, at frame rates up to 60 fps.
  • Connection protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery to its servers.

Check the current encoder guidance in YouTube Help, because the appropriate bitrate depends on the exact codec and format you send.

Do not use upload bitrates as live-stream targets

Uploading a finished video and sending a live encoder feed are different workflows. YouTube’s separate upload recommendations include 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps at high frame rates. Those upload figures are not the live ingestion targets above. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for upload guidance.

Bitrate, latency, and reliability are different choices

Bitrate controls how much encoded data the stream sends; latency is the delay between capture by the encoder or camera and playback for viewers. YouTube notes that choosing lower latency may increase playback buffering. If you are not interacting with viewers in real time, reducing latency may matter less than stable playback. YouTube also says 4K/2160 streams do not offer the low-latency option and use normal latency. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and YouTube’s latency guidance.

How to test and troubleshoot bitrate problems

If stream health reports instability or viewers see buffering

  • Check whether your sustained upload capacity can handle the total stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
  • Check whether other devices or applications are using the connection, and test again with less competing upload traffic.
  • If the connection cannot reliably sustain the target, choose a lower resolution or frame rate and then use the bitrate recommendation for that format and codec.
  • Run a representative preflight test with motion and audio, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages.

If your encoder settings do not match YouTube’s recommendations

  • Confirm the encoder’s actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than relying on a preset’s name.
  • Use the recommendation column for that codec; H.264 recommendations do not automatically apply to AV1 or H.265/HEVC.
  • Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and verify that the keyframe interval does not exceed four seconds.
  • Use RTMPS when configuring delivery to YouTube, as recommended by YouTube.

If a test looks good but the live event does not

Repeat the test under conditions closer to the real broadcast, including similar movement and audio. YouTube specifically advises testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health while live; a short test on an idle connection may not represent a busy event.
