Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteEncoding turns raw audio or video into a compressed digital stream. Transcoding starts with an already encoded stream, decodes it, and encodes it again—often to change its format, size, or other properties. If you only change the container while copying the encoded streams, that is usually called remuxing or stream copying, not transcoding.
What encoding means
Raw media consists of video frames, audio samples, or subtitle data. An encoder compresses that material into packets that can be stored or delivered. The compression method is the codec: it defines how the stream is encoded and decoded.
Encoding is often lossy, discarding some information to reduce the amount of data. Lossless encoding is also possible, typically with larger files. The result depends on the codec and settings; encoding does not invariably mean a particular amount of quality loss.
What transcoding means
Transcoding takes an encoded stream, decodes it, and encodes it again. A workflow may also process the decoded media between those stages. FFmpeg describes it as “the process of decoding a stream and then encoding it again” (FFmpeg documentation, “3.2 Transcoding”).

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
That second encoding can be useful when the output needs a different codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or other media change. It can also introduce another generation of loss when the source is already lossy, though the result depends on the source, codec, settings, and workflow.
Encoding, transcoding, and remuxing compared
| Operation | Starting point | What happens | Typical reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Encoding | Raw frames or samples | Compresses the media into an encoded stream. | Create a stream or file in a suitable codec and profile. |
| Transcoding | An encoded stream | Decodes it, may process it, then encodes it again. | Meet a destination’s codec or media requirements, or apply changes such as resizing. |
| Remuxing / stream copying | One or more encoded streams | Copies the encoded packets into a container without decoding and re-encoding them. | Change packaging when the existing streams are compatible with the destination. |
Codec and container are different
A codec describes how a media stream is compressed and decompressed. A container packages one or more streams—such as video, audio, and subtitles—together. A filename extension generally indicates the container, not every codec inside it, so changing an extension alone does not establish that a file is compatible.

Compatibility depends on the combination of container and stream codecs supported by the destination. AWS MediaConvert’s supported input formats reference, for example, lists supported container and codec combinations for that service. Its entries should not be treated as universal compatibility rules for other software or devices.
How to decide whether to transcode or remux
- Check the destination. Identify the device, platform, or delivery specification and the video, audio, container, and profile requirements it actually supports.
- Inspect the source. Determine its container, video and audio codecs, and relevant stream properties. The extension by itself is not enough.
- Copy the streams if they already fit. If the destination accepts the existing streams and no media processing is needed, use stream copy or remuxing where the tool and target container support it. This avoids another encode.
- Transcode only to meet a real need. Choose it when a codec is incompatible or you need a change such as resizing, deinterlacing, overlays, audio resampling, or mixing. Select an output codec and settings appropriate to the destination.
- Evaluate the trade-offs. Consider compatibility, quality retention, output size or bitrate, processing time, and any delivery-profile requirements. The right choice follows from the target, not simply from a changed filename extension.
For example, Apple’s HLS authoring specification for Apple devices sets delivery requirements for that target. A profile like this can make transcoding necessary even when a source file plays successfully elsewhere.

Does transcoding reduce quality?
It can, especially when a lossy source is decoded and encoded again with lossy settings. But quality loss is not guaranteed to be identical—or even perceptible—in every workflow. It depends on the source, codecs, encoding settings, and any processing. A lossless encode can preserve the decoded signal, though the file may be much larger.
If the existing streams already satisfy the destination and no processing is needed, stream copying avoids another encoding generation. If you do need to transcode, choose settings for the actual delivery target and inspect the result rather than assuming that every transcode has the same quality or size outcome.

Where StreamNeo fits—and where it does not
Encoding and transcoding describe media-processing operations; they are not interchangeable names for cloud streaming. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. You upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It is not a camera-streaming service.
StreamNeo says it streams uploaded video as made, without re-encoding, up to 4K 60fps. That makes it relevant if your question is how to keep uploaded-video programming running on YouTube, not if you need to convert a file to a different codec or delivery profile. See StreamNeo for the service details.
Or let it run in the cloud
For an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos, the steps are upload, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams at its existing quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
