BitGo is a digital-asset infrastructure provider that offers institutional custody through regulated entities. Its custody service combines private-key management with transaction controls, reporting and related infrastructure. In practice, the important questions are which BitGo entity serves the client, who holds and controls each key, how transfers are approved and recovered, and what the applicable insurance actually covers.
What BitGo does for institutional clients
BitGo describes its institutional custody as a service for safeguarding digital assets and controlling how they move. The offering includes custody wallets, key-management arrangements, transaction policies and reporting tools. That is different from simply installing wallet software: the custody relationship also depends on the contracting entity, the client’s agreement and the procedures for access, approvals and recovery. BitGo outlines its service and custody-versus-self-custody model on its institutional custody page.

BitGo names BitGo Bank & Trust, National Association; BitGo New York Trust Company, LLC; BitGo Europe GmbH; and BitGo GmbH (Switzerland) among the entities through which custody wallets are provided. Availability and eligibility can differ by jurisdiction, so a client should confirm the entity named in its agreement rather than assume all customers use the same one. These entity and product details are described on BitGo’s custodial wallets page.

A custodian safeguards key material and provides a process for authorizing transactions. A transfer generally begins with an authorized user or system initiating it; configured controls can then require validation and approvals before the necessary key or keys sign it. The precise workflow depends on the account, supported asset, signing design and customer policies.

BitGo describes controls including address allowlisting, transaction or velocity limits, user roles, approval rules, hardware security modules (HSMs), transaction validation and audit logging. These controls can help limit unauthorized or mistaken transfers and support oversight, but they do not remove all cyber, operational, legal or counterparty risk. See BitGo’s security overview for its description of these measures.
Multisignature and MPC: two key-signing approaches
Key architecture affects who must participate in signing and how key material is handled. Multisignature (multisig) and multi-party computation (MPC) are not interchangeable guarantees of safety; their suitability depends on the asset, implementation, recovery plan and governance around them.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Multisignature
A multisignature wallet requires a defined number of keys to approve a transaction. BitGo’s technical comparison describes 2-of-3 as a common arrangement: any two of three keys must sign. The keys can be managed by different parties or in different environments, depending on the configuration. BitGo describes its M-of-N setup as requiring multiple parties to sign, but the number and control of keys for a particular account should be confirmed with the provider.
Multi-party computation
MPC distributes key material into shares and uses a cryptographic protocol to produce a signature without reassembling the complete private key in one place. The exact trust, availability and recovery properties depend on the implementation and on who controls the shares. Some assets or chains may support one approach but not another.

BitGo’s wallet security comparison explains its distinction between multisignature and MPC. Neither method alone answers who can initiate a transfer, who approves it, how a lost key is recovered or who bears responsibility if a process fails.
Cold storage, access and self-custody trade-offs
BitGo describes its institutional custody wallets as cold-storage oriented. Cold storage keeps key material offline or otherwise separated from internet-connected signing systems, reducing exposure to some online attacks. It can also add operational steps and affect withdrawal availability. Clients should establish the account’s actual transaction process, service commitments and incident procedures rather than infer them from the label “cold.”

With a custodian, the provider takes on key-management and operational responsibilities under the custody arrangement; the institution still needs to govern users, approvals, policies and its own compliance obligations. With self-custody, the institution retains direct control of keys and must operate the security, recovery, governance and compliance processes itself. Neither model is automatically safer: the better fit depends on the institution’s capabilities, control requirements and risk tolerance.

Segregation and regulatory context
BitGo says client assets are held separately from its corporate balance sheets within regulated entities. That is the company’s description of its custody structure, not a universal conclusion about how assets would be treated in every insolvency. Legal treatment can depend on the contracting entity, jurisdiction, agreement and facts of a particular case. Institutions should review the relevant terms with their legal and compliance advisers, including what “qualified custody” means for their own obligations.

What BitGo’s insurance statement means
BitGo advertises insurance coverage of up to $250 million when BitGo Bank & Trust, N.A. holds all private keys. Its insurance FAQ, last updated in May 2025, says the policy generally addresses keys stolen, lost or misused by BitGo. It also says the policy does not cover arrangements in which the client or a third party holds some keys, citing hot wallets as an example. The advertised limit is not a guarantee that every asset, account or incident will be reimbursed; the operative policy governs.
The 2025 FAQ says customers may discuss additional insurance placement with broker Woodruff Sawyer. It also describes a possible separate KRS insurance route for hot-wallet clients through Digital Asset Services. Availability, eligibility and terms need to be confirmed directly; these options do not change the conditions of the underlying policy. BitGo’s insurance page and 2025 insurance FAQ are public summaries, not substitutes for reviewing the current policy.
Questions to ask before choosing a custody arrangement
- Contract and jurisdiction: Which legal entity will provide the service, under what governing law, and is the service and asset available to this client?
- Key control: Who holds each key or MPC share? Who can initiate, approve and sign a transfer, and can any party act alone?
- Signing and asset support: Which signing method and threshold apply to each asset? What are the recovery and continuity procedures if a key, device or credential is lost?
- Access and controls: How do allowlists, transaction limits, role separation and approvals work? What withdrawal timelines, service levels and escalation procedures apply?
- Audit and reporting: What transaction records and reports are available, and how can the institution reconcile activity and investigate an incident?
- Insurance: Which entity holds all keys for the advertised coverage condition? Which loss events, exclusions, limits, insured parties and claims procedures apply, and is the policy current?
- Resilience: How are disaster recovery, personnel changes, incident response and continued access handled?
These questions distinguish the custody service an institution will actually receive from broad labels such as “regulated,” “cold” or “insured.”
