It stores data as electrical charge in memory cells, then reads that data by sensing how the charge changes each cell’s threshold voltage. Unlike planar NAND, BiCS stacks memory cells vertically; manufacturers can also raise capacity by storing more bits in each cell. Those are separate ways to increase density, with different design tradeoffs.
What BiCS FLASH is
BiCS FLASH is KIOXIA’s name for its 3D vertical NAND flash technology. Planar NAND arranges memory cells across a flat surface; 3D NAND builds upward, stacking cell layers to fit more cells into a given area. KIOXIA says it announced BiCS FLASH in 2007 to address the manufacturing-cost challenge of stacking. Its company chronology lists commercialization milestones at 48 layers in 2015, 96 in 2018, 112 in 2020, and 162 in 2022. These are historical milestones, not a complete list of generations or a claim about the newest devices. KIOXIA’s BiCS FLASH explanation describes the structure and chronology.

How the vertical structure is built
A useful analogy is a building: adding floors puts more memory cells on the same footprint. In the actual structure, alternating control-gate electrodes and insulating layers form a stack. Many vertical holes are opened through it; charge-storage film and a column-shaped electrode are formed inside each hole. Where a control-gate layer meets a vertical column, they form a memory cell.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKIOXIA calls its batch-processing approach “punch and plug.” Instead of constructing cells one layer at a time, the process stacks the gate plates, makes holes through the stack, and forms the column and charge-storage structure across the layers. The company says this approach reduces manufacturing cost; layer count alone does not establish a device’s cost or performance.

How NAND stores and reads data
A flash cell stores electrons in an insulated charge-storage film. A high voltage applied to the control gate moves electrons into the film; a high voltage applied from the silicon-substrate side moves them out. The charge remains when power is off, so the data is nonvolatile. KIOXIA’s NAND explanation describes this storage and read process.
Reading a cell’s state
The electrons alter the cell’s threshold voltage—the voltage at which the cell begins to conduct. During a read, the device applies a read voltage and senses whether current flows. In KIOXIA’s simplified example, a cell holding electrons has a higher threshold voltage and does not conduct at the chosen read voltage, while a cell without them does. The distinguishable states encode data.
This is a simplified view of a cell, not the complete read path in an SSD. Real products use sensing and error-management circuitry, and a finished drive also depends on its controller and firmware.

Why it is called NAND
NAND refers to the arrangement of memory cells in series, which supports high-density arrays. NAND flash is a storage component, not a complete consumer SSD: the finished product also includes peripheral circuitry and a controller/firmware system. KIOXIA describes SSD uses, but its cited technology material does not detail a full controller architecture.
Two different ways to increase NAND capacity
Layer count and bits per cell are distinct capacity-scaling methods. More layers add cells vertically; more bits per cell encode more data states in each cell by distinguishing more threshold-voltage ranges.
| Cell type | Bits stored per cell | Illustrative number of states |
|---|---|---|
| SLC | 1 | 2 |
| MLC | 2 | 4 |
| TLC | 3 | 8 |
| QLC | 4 | 16 |
The state counts follow the simplified binary model: a cell representing n bits distinguishes 2n states. KIOXIA uses these SLC, MLC, TLC, and QLC definitions in its flash-memory overview.

The capacity and tradeoff of more bits per cell
Storing more bits in each cell can increase capacity and reduce cost per stored amount. It also requires the device to distinguish more closely spaced voltage states. KIOXIA says higher bits per cell require slower reading and writing and have shorter lifespan than lower-bit alternatives. That is a general design tradeoff, not a universal endurance rating for every TLC or QLC product: actual behavior depends on product design, controller, workload, and management techniques.
As one product example, KIOXIA’s technology overview gives a 4 TB single-package capacity using BiCS QLC with a 16-die stacked architecture. That is a company example, not a specification for all QLC packages; the cited page does not state the year for that figure. KIOXIA’s BiCS FLASH page provides the example.

Layer count is only one part of an architecture, and figures from different generations should not be combined as if they describe the same chip. In a 2023 technical summary, KIOXIA reported that its generation 8 design used 218 word lines, CBA (CMOS directly Bonded to Array), and OPS (On Pitch SGD). For the discussed 1 Tb TLC product, it reported a 3.2 Gbps data-transfer rate outside the chip, 40 μs internal read time, 205 MB/s program throughput, and 18.3 Gb/mm² density. These are vendor-reported figures for that product and context, not neutral cross-vendor benchmarks. KIOXIA’s technical overview contains the generation 8 summary.

KIOXIA’s product overview describes generation 9 512 Gb and 1 Tb TLC devices and generation 10 with 332 layers. These are company product-overview statements, not a claim that every device in a generation has the same capacity or configuration. Check the specific product’s specifications for current availability and details; do not treat generation 8’s 218-word-line figures and generation 10’s layer count as one device’s specifications. KIOXIA’s BiCS FLASH overview describes these generations.
Where BiCS NAND is used—and what to compare
KIOXIA names automotive applications, compact PCs, cloud servers, and hyperscale data centers, and says its SSD portfolio uses BiCS FLASH for client PCs, enterprise servers and storage, and cloud data centers. NAND is also used in consumer products such as memory cards and USB drives, but the consulted material does not identify the BiCS generation in every retail model. Check the exact product specifications before attributing a particular card or drive to BiCS. KIOXIA’s SSD overview describes its SSD portfolio.
When comparing finished SSDs, compare the model and capacity alongside interface, workload performance, endurance rating, power, warranty, and price. NAND type or layer count alone does not establish which drive is fastest or most reliable. The cited manufacturer material does not provide a controlled, like-for-like comparison of BiCS NAND with other vendors’ NAND.
