Audio on demand is audio you can choose and play at a time that suits you, rather than having to listen when it is broadcast. It includes music streaming, podcasts, audiobooks and radio programmes available for catch-up. You may stream it as you listen or download it for later.
What does audio on demand mean?
The defining feature is listener control over when to play available audio. Live radio follows a schedule; on-demand audio lets you select content and listen when you choose. The UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport describes on-demand music and podcasts as offering control over what people hear, personalisation, sharing and a wider range of content than a fixed set of live radio stations can provide (Digital radio and audio review).

The phrase describes a broad category, not one file format or type of service. Music catalogues, podcasts, audiobooks and replays of radio programmes can all be on demand if listeners can choose when to play them.
How is it different from live radio?
With live radio, the broadcaster determines what is on and when. With on-demand audio, the listener chooses from content that is available and starts it at a convenient time. A radio programme can fit both models: it is live when heard during its broadcast and on demand if the broadcaster makes a replay available later.

On-demand listening has been part of a wider audio mix rather than a replacement for live radio. The UK government review reported that, in Spring 2020, live radio accounted for 72% of all audio listening in the UK, on-demand music streaming 14%, podcasts 4% and other audio formats 10. These are historical UK figures, published in the review’s 2022 update, not current or global estimates.
Are podcasts the same as audio on demand?
No. Podcasting is one way to distribute on-demand audio, but the terms are not interchangeable. A podcast is typically an episodic digital audio programme. Some are created specifically for podcast listeners; others began as radio programmes and are made available as catch-up audio. The Reuters Institute distinguishes these as “native podcasts” and “catch-up radio,” while noting that the boundary is not always clear and listeners may not distinguish them (The Podcast Revolution).

Other on-demand audio—such as a selected song, an audiobook or a radio replay—does not have to be a podcast. Podcast episodes may be delivered through listening apps or RSS feeds, while other audio may be accessed through a broadcaster’s or streaming service’s app, a web player or a connected device.

Does on-demand audio have to be streamed?
No. Streaming and downloading describe how audio is delivered or accessed, not whether it is on demand. You can stream audio as it plays, download a complete file before listening, or, depending on the service, receive it in sections during playback. An IAB South Africa toolkit uses “audio on demand” for files accessible at any time and contrasts them with continuously delivered real-time audio; that is a useful delivery-focused distinction, not a universal definition (IAB South Africa Audio Toolkit).

- Download: save audio to a device for playback later; whether this is available depends on the service and its terms.
Where can you listen?
Common access routes include music or broadcaster apps, podcast apps, websites and connected devices. Podcast apps may use RSS feeds to receive episodes. UK government material also identifies smartphones and smart speakers as routes to online audio. The app or device changes how you find and play the content; it does not change the basic meaning of on-demand listening.

- You can choose a particular programme, episode, song or book from content made available by a service.
- You can start it at a time you choose, rather than waiting for its scheduled broadcast.
- You may be able to stream it, download it or use both options, depending on the service.
These criteria describe ordinary usage; the cited sources do not establish one universal formal definition that settles every borderline case. A broadcast replay is a clear example of catch-up audio, while a programme made for an app may be called a podcast. In both cases, the listener can choose when to play it.
