What Is AT-SPI on D-Bus? How Linux Accessibility Works

AT-SPI connects Linux applications with screen readers, inspection tools, and UI tests through a dedicated accessibility D-Bus.

AT-SPI is the Linux accessibility interface that lets assistive technologies and other clients inspect application interfaces and exchange accessibility information. On D-Bus, it uses a dedicated accessibility bus—not the user’s regular session bus—to connect applications with clients such as the Orca screen reader.

What AT-SPI means

AT-SPI stands for Assistive Technology Service Provider Interface. It is software infrastructure and a protocol, not a physical connector or consumer device. Applications expose information about their interfaces through AT-SPI so assistive technologies can use it; inspection and automated testing tools can also access that information.

GNOME’s at-spi2-core project supplies D-Bus interface definitions, core daemons, ATK-related code, and integration hooks. Its repository organizes these components into interface definitions, bus-launching code, and the registry daemon.

Why AT-SPI has its own D-Bus

AT-SPI traffic runs on a dedicated accessibility bus, separate from the user’s regular session D-Bus. The project explains that accessibility interfaces can be chatty; separating their traffic avoids burdening the main session bus.

Clients discover the accessibility bus through the normal session bus. They contact the org.a11y.Bus service and call GetAddress to obtain the accessibility bus address. The launcher can start the accessibility bus on demand. On that bus, the registry daemon claims the org.a11y.atspi.Registry name and tracks accessible applications. The AT-SPI bus documentation describes this discovery and launch flow.

How applications expose accessibility information

The route from an application toolkit to AT-SPI depends on the toolkit and its integration. Older stacks commonly use ATK, the accessibility toolkit, together with an adaptor that communicates over D-Bus. Modern toolkits can implement AT-SPI D-Bus directly and translate their own interface concepts into AT-SPI concepts.

GTK4, Qt5, and WebKit Direct AT-SPI D-Bus implementation, as described in GNOME’s architecture guide

This is an architectural distinction, not a performance ranking. GNOME’s accessibility architecture guide describes these toolkit approaches and identifies common clients and tools.

Who uses AT-SPI

  • Assistive technologies: Orca is a screen reader client that uses accessibility information exposed by applications.
  • Inspection tools: Accerciser helps examine the accessibility stack and application interfaces.
  • Automated tests: AT-SPI clients can inspect information that applications present and use it for UI automation.

Using AT-SPI from Python

For new Python clients, the pyatspi2 project README recommends using libatspi’s GObject-introspection bindings directly. The README describes pyatspi as a wrapper around libatspi and says it is unlikely to receive active maintenance beyond bug fixes. That is the project’s guidance in its README, not a guarantee about future maintenance status.

Python-based UI automation can use AT-SPI to inspect exposed accessibility information. The usefulness of that approach depends on the information an application makes available; AT-SPI does not make inaccessible or unexposed interface details automatically available to a test.

How to think about the architecture

When tracing an accessibility interaction, separate three layers: how the toolkit exposes accessibility concepts, how the client discovers and communicates over the accessibility bus, and what the client does with the information. A toolkit’s ATK adaptor or direct D-Bus implementation is the application-side path; the dedicated bus and registry provide the communication infrastructure; Orca, Accerciser, or a test client is the consumer.
