iCloud is Apple’s set of online services for storing and syncing selected information across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. It can keep photos, files, contacts, notes, and other supported data available across your Apple devices and on the web. The key distinction: syncing keeps a shared library current; it does not automatically create a separate backup of everything you sync.
What is iCloud?
Apple describes iCloud as a service that stores personal information, keeps it current across devices, and makes sharing photos and files easier. You sign in with your Apple Account and choose which supported iCloud features to use. Apple’s iCloud User Guide explains the service, while its iPhone guide lists examples of supported information.

Depending on your settings, device, operating system, and region, iCloud can handle photos and videos, iCloud Drive files, mail, contacts, calendars, notes, reminders, messages, passwords, device backups, and data from compatible third-party apps. It does not mean every app or file on a device is automatically uploaded.

How does iCloud work?
Sign in to iCloud with the same Apple Account on each device, then enable the features you want. Supported services store or sync their data so it can be available on your other signed-in devices and, where supported, on iCloud.com or Windows. Availability is not identical across devices, operating systems, and countries or regions.

Is iCloud the same as iCloud Backup?
No. iCloud includes different services, and syncing is not the same as making a separate backup. Syncing keeps selected data—such as a photo library or contacts—consistent across devices. Device backup is intended to help restore a device from a saved copy. Apple supports backing up with iCloud or a computer and restoring a device from an iCloud backup; see its iCloud support hub.

Does iCloud Photos back up my photos?
iCloud Photos stores your library in iCloud and syncs changes across devices using the feature. Apple says iCloud Photos content is not duplicated in iCloud Backup. That means iCloud Photos is useful for access and synchronization, but it is not an independent second copy of the library. For important photos, keep a separate backup copy, such as on a computer or other storage you manage. Apple’s iCloud Photos guide advises keeping backup copies of the library.

When iCloud Photos is on, deleting a photo from the library also removes it from other devices using iCloud Photos. Apple says deleted photos remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days, after which they are permanently deleted. If you want to preserve a photo, save a separate copy before deleting it.

How much free iCloud storage do you get?
Apple provides 5 GB of free iCloud storage. This storage is shared by the iCloud data and features you use, including items such as photos, files, and device backups. If you need more space, iCloud+ offers paid storage plans; Apple’s feature guide says plans can be upgraded up to 12 TB. Check Apple’s current plan information for your country or region before deciding, since prices and availability can vary. Apple’s iCloud feature guide describes iCloud+.
Where can you access iCloud data?
Depending on the feature, you can access iCloud information on Apple devices signed in to your account, through iCloud.com, and on supported Windows devices. The available features and steps differ by platform, and some require particular system versions or are limited by country or region. Apple’s iCloud User Guide and iPhone guide outline supported access and requirements.
Should you use iCloud?
iCloud is useful if you want selected data to stay accessible and current across devices signed in to your Apple Account. Decide which features to enable, keep track of the shared storage allowance, and treat synchronized data differently from an independent backup. If you need a recoverable copy of important files or photos, maintain a separate backup rather than relying on synchronization alone.
