Apple Home Key is a digital house key stored in Apple Wallet. With a compatible smart lock paired through Apple’s Home app, you can unlock the door using an iPhone or Apple Watch. The key is added to Wallet during setup; whether you need to authenticate at the door depends on the unlocking mode you choose.
What is Apple Home Key?
Home Key is a Wallet credential for unlocking a compatible home door lock with an iPhone or Apple Watch. It is not a general name for smart locks, Apple Home accessories, or every lock that works with the Home app. Apple describes the feature in its Home Key setup and use guide.

How does Apple Home Key work?
Pair a supported lock in the Home app, and the home key is automatically added to Wallet on your iPhone. During setup, choose whether unlocking should use Express Mode or require authentication. The Home app is where you pair the lock and manage its settings; Wallet holds the key used at the door.

Express Mode
With Express Mode enabled, bring your iPhone near the lock or hold your Apple Watch near it to unlock. Apple says Express Mode allows unlocking without Face ID or Touch ID.

Authentication required
If you do not choose Express Mode, you authenticate with Face ID or a passcode when unlocking. This adds an authentication step at the door.
Do all Apple Home or Matter locks support Home Key?
No. Apple supports Apple Home- and Matter-compatible locks in the Home app, but it explicitly cautions that “Not all Home app-compatible locks support home key.” Check the exact model and generation in the manufacturer’s specifications rather than relying on a general Apple Home, Matter, or smart-lock label.

What to check before choosing a Home Key lock
- Exact model support: Confirm that the specific lock you intend to buy supports Apple Home Key.
- Device and software requirements: Level publishes iPhone, Apple Watch, iOS, and watchOS requirements for its Home Key-compatible models in its compatibility requirements. Check the current requirements against your devices.
- Door fit: Aqara describes its Smart Lock U400 as compatible with single-cylinder deadbolts. Verify the lock’s current fit details against your door before purchasing.
- Other access methods: Apple says a supported lock may offer a home key, an access code, or both; guest access codes are available only on locks that support them. Do not assume every model has the same options.
Aqara Smart Lock U400, Level Lock Pro, and Level Lock+ (Matter) are examples whose manufacturers document Home Key support. They are examples, not a complete list or a ranking; model requirements and availability can change.

Access for household members and guests
For a supported lock, residents can receive a home key through the Home app. The app also manages shared access and, when the lock supports the feature, guest access codes. Available sharing and code options depend on the lock.

What Home Key’s security claim does—and does not—mean
Express Mode is a convenience choice: Apple says it skips Face ID or Touch ID at the door. Apple’s Apple Wallet security documentation describes privacy and security protections for access keys. Those protections should not be read as a guarantee that any particular physical lock is invulnerable, or that every manufacturer implements its lock identically.
