Claude is Anthropic’s family of AI models and its conversational assistant; ChatGPT is OpenAI’s conversational AI assistant. Both can help with common language and knowledge-work tasks, but they offer different models, tools, plans, and limits. Neither is a universal winner: the better fit depends on what you need to do and which features your plan actually includes.
What is Claude AI?
Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant, powered by a family of models rather than one fixed model. Anthropic describes Claude as suited to language, reasoning, analysis, coding, text and code generation, and work involving images. Its models have different capability and context profiles, and names and availability can change. Anthropic’s Claude introduction describes the product; its model overview explains the model family.

Anthropic reports context windows of up to 1 million tokens for some models. That is a model-specific maximum, not a guarantee that every Claude model, plan, or interface gives every user that much context.

What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s conversational AI assistant. OpenAI lists capabilities including web search, deep research, image understanding, data analysis, and voice in its ChatGPT capabilities overview. Which capabilities and models a person can use may depend on their plan, workspace configuration, and feature rollout, as OpenAI explains in its model-access information.

Claude vs. ChatGPT: what should you compare?
The products overlap in conversational help for writing, explanation, analysis, and coding. A useful comparison is less about a blanket ranking and more about the model, tools, limits, and work environment available to you.
| What matters | How to compare |
|---|---|
| Everyday work | Try the tasks you actually do: drafting, summarizing, explaining, analyzing, coding, or working with text and images. Product descriptions are not independent quality tests. |
| Built-in tools | Check whether the relevant plan includes tools you need, such as web search, research workflows, data analysis, voice, file handling, or image features. |
| Model access | Compare the specific models available in your country and on your plan or managed workspace, rather than relying on a general product name. |
| Limits | Check usage caps, context and output limits, and restrictions for individual features. A model’s advertised context window does not necessarily equal the limit in the interface or plan you use. |
| Organization needs | If you work with a team, compare collaboration, administration, privacy terms, and workspace controls in the current vendor documentation. |
| Cost | Compare current recurring prices, billing terms, taxes, and included limits against how often you expect to use the service. |
Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s feature pages describe their own products, not a controlled head-to-head evaluation. The available information does not establish that Claude is categorically better at writing or that ChatGPT is categorically better at research.

How Claude plans and pricing compare
Anthropic lists Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise options. Its Claude pricing page showed the following figures when accessed in 2026; prices and plan details can change, so check the live page before subscribing.
| Claude plan | Price shown by Anthropic (accessed 2026) |
|---|---|
| Free | $0 |
| Pro | $20 per month, or $17 per month with an annual subscription discount billed up front |
| Max | From $100 per person monthly |
| Team | $30 monthly or $25 monthly with annual billing; five-member minimum |
| Enterprise | Contact sales |
Applicable taxes may be additional where indicated. These prices do not establish a like-for-like comparison with ChatGPT: plans can bundle different models, usage allowances, and tools. OpenAI’s model documentation also notes that access and limits may vary with plan and workspace settings and change as features roll out. Check OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing page and the plan details for the particular features you need.

Which assistant should you choose?
Start with your actual workload, then confirm that the relevant plan includes the necessary model and tools. A short trial using representative tasks can help you decide whether the responses suit your needs; it is not a substitute for checking limits, data terms, or availability.
- For writing, coding, or analysis: compare outputs on your own examples, since general product descriptions do not prove a universal quality advantage.
- For web-based research, data analysis, voice, or image work: verify the exact tool availability and restrictions for the account and plan you would use.
- For long documents: look at the context limit available in the specific model and interface, not only a model-family maximum.
- For teams: compare administrative and collaboration controls alongside price and individual features.
- For budget-conscious use: compare free access and paid tiers against your expected usage; prices alone do not tell you which service offers better value for your tasks.
What the available comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Official documentation establishes that both are broad AI assistant products and that their available tools and models depend on access conditions. It does not provide an independent, directly comparable Claude-versus-ChatGPT performance score. Product capabilities, model names, prices, and limits are volatile, so make the final decision using each company’s current documentation for your location, plan, and workspace.
