Android System WebView is a system component that lets Android apps display web pages and other web content inside the app’s own interface. It is not a standalone browser: the app controls the surrounding screen and can combine web content with native app features.
What Android System WebView does
Android’s API reference describes a WebView as “A View that displays web pages.” In practical terms, it is a user-interface component an app can place in one of its screens, much like other interface elements.

An app can use WebView to load a website, display local files, or render content created dynamically by the app. It supports HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and can connect web content with the app’s code. This makes it useful for web-powered screens such as feeds, tutorials, advertisements, legal information, and mini-games.

Android separates the WebView implementation distributed as an APK from the framework APIs associated with an Android OS version. The Jetpack Webkit library can help apps use WebView capabilities across more platform versions, but available features still depend on the WebView APK installed on the device. How WebView differs from a browser and Custom Tabs
A WebView places web content within an app’s own screen. It does not provide the complete browser interface, such as an address bar and standard navigation controls. The host app decides how the content is presented and how it fits with the rest of the app.
For ordinary web browsing, Android recommends using a standard browser. Custom Tabs are another option when an app wants to open web content in an in-app browsing experience powered by the user’s browser. WebView is suited to content that needs to be embedded and presented as part of the app; Custom Tabs are suited to browsing a web page without building a browser interface into the app.

How Android System WebView is updated
Android documents Google Play as a channel for delivering WebView updates, which are integrated into apps that use the component. The Android documentation describes update timing differently on different pages, so it does not establish a single guaranteed schedule. Android’s WebView documentation provides the component details and update guidance.
What WebView means for app developers
Embedding web content also gives app developers responsibilities. Android’s guidance calls out performance, security hardening, and lifecycle management; WebView can be memory-intensive, so developers need to account for how it behaves within the host app. Android’s WebView guidance covers these considerations.
