What Is an XRP Treasury, and How Does It Differ From a Personal XRP Wallet?

An XRP treasury adds organizational custody, approvals, valuation and recordkeeping around the same digital asset held in a personal wallet.

An XRP treasury is an organization’s XRP holding managed as part of its financial resources. A personal XRP wallet is an individual’s way to access XRP. The asset is the same; what changes is who controls access, how decisions are approved, and how the holding is recorded and managed.

“XRP treasury” describes an organizational context, not a special XRP token or a particular XRP Ledger wallet type. Holding XRP in a company treasury does not, by itself, mean the company uses XRP for payments, earns income from it, or follows a specific accounting or legal treatment.

What an XRP treasury means

A company treasury manages financial resources, which may include cash, investments, and—in some cases—digital assets. When XRP is part of that pool, treasury staff may track the balance, monitor its value, set rules for transfers, and coordinate custody and transaction records with the organization’s other financial systems.

The word “treasury” therefore refers to the purpose and management around the holding, not a different form of XRP. XRP is native to the XRP Ledger, and the asset remains XRP whether an individual or an organization holds it. XRPL documentation explains XRP’s relationship to the XRP Ledger.

A balance alone does not tell you why an organization holds XRP. It might be an allocation of financial resources; it does not prove that the organization uses XRP in its payment operations, uses any particular vendor’s products, or earns a return from the holding.

Nor does the phrase “XRP treasury” prescribe how a company must structure its accounts. It does not identify a special wallet, guarantee that the company owns the keys directly, or determine the holding’s accounting or regulatory status. Those details depend on the organization’s chosen arrangement and circumstances. The available examples show different possible structures, not a universal model for every business.

How it differs from a personal wallet

The most important differences are who controls the keys, how transfers are authorized, what recovery options exist, and how the balance is recorded. A personal wallet may be managed by one person. A company treasury adds organizational processes, which can involve multiple people and separate systems for custody, approvals, valuation, and accounting records.

What to compare Personal non-custodial wallet Corporate XRP treasury
Access and key control The individual controls the secret keys. Key control may sit with a custodian, company-controlled infrastructure, or an arrangement that combines approved roles.
Transfer authorization Usually handled by the wallet holder. May use role-based approvals, transfer policies, and audit records.
Recovery The XRPL wallet guide says lost keys leave the user locked out, with no recovery option. Depends on the chosen custody design and its documented controls; recovery should not be assumed without provider-specific evidence.
Valuation and records The holder may track the balance personally. Treasury workflows may combine balances, transaction data, and fiat valuations for finance teams.
Operational risks Loss or compromise of keys, a device, or recovery information. Key loss or compromise, provider and process risks, authorization failures, and reconciliation or accounting errors.

These are common distinctions, not fixed rules for every wallet or organization. The arrangement depends on the wallet, custodian, internal controls, and applicable requirements.

For an individual, the central tradeoff is direct control versus reliance on a service. For a company, the question expands: the organization must decide not only how keys are protected, but who is permitted to act, how transactions are approved, and how activity is documented for finance and oversight. A company may distribute responsibilities among employees or use an outside custodian, but the exact controls depend on its design.

Custodial and non-custodial wallets: who holds the keys?

Non-custodial access

With a non-custodial wallet, the user controls the secret keys used to access the XRP. That gives the holder direct control over transactions, but also makes the holder responsible for protecting the keys and recovery information. The XRPL documentation on cryptographic keys warns that losing the keys means losing access, with no recovery option provided by the ledger.

Custodial access

With a custodial wallet or service, a provider controls the keys. The provider may offer account recovery, but the user depends on its systems and policies and may be limited in what actions the platform allows. The XRPL wallet guide describes the distinction between custodial and non-custodial arrangements.

Neither model removes risk. Self-custody concentrates responsibility with the holder; custody through a provider adds dependence on that provider. For a company, the key question is not simply whether custody is “safe,” but which people or service can authorize access, how exceptions are handled, and what happens if credentials, staff, or a provider become unavailable.

“Who holds my keys?” is therefore a useful first question, but not the only one. Ask who can initiate a transfer, who can approve it, and whether those actions leave records that can be reviewed. In a custodial setup, also understand what the provider permits and what its recovery process actually covers. A possible recovery feature is not a guarantee unless the specific service documents it.

How corporate XRP treasury operations can work

A company must decide how the XRP holding fits its financial policies and operating controls. Depending on its setup, treasury and finance workflows may cover:

  • Choosing whether keys are controlled by the company, a custodian, or both through a defined arrangement.
  • Deciding who can initiate a transfer, who must approve it, and how unusual or emergency transactions are documented.
  • Recording XRP balances and transactions alongside other financial information, including fiat valuations where needed.
  • Reconciling ledger activity with internal records and accounting systems.
  • Planning for lost credentials, staff unavailability, technology disruption, and provider failure.

These tasks connect the digital-asset holding to the company’s regular financial operations. For example, a finance team may need to compare transaction activity with its internal records and track a fiat value for reporting. A treasury platform may help organize that information, but the company still needs to decide what data it relies on and how discrepancies are addressed. The sources do not specify a single valuation method or accounting treatment that applies to all companies.

Institutional services may provide governance controls and key-management options such as hardware security modules (HSMs) or multiparty computation (MPC). Those are possible approaches, not mandatory features of every corporate treasury. A trust described in a 2025 SEC-filed annual report, for example, held XRP through Coinbase Custody in segregated trust accounts. That illustrates one formal custody arrangement; an investment trust is not the same as an operating company, and its setup is not a universal rule. The filing describes the trust’s structure.

  • WORKS WITH BALLET CRYPTO APP FOR XRP - Use the Ballet Crypto App for iOS and Android to scan each coin, view the XRP address, load XRP, check balances, and transfer XRP through a guided workflow.
  • TAMPER-EVIDENT SECURITY LAYERS - Each coin includes peel-to-reveal protection that helps provide a clear visual signal if the private key area has been accessed. Once opened to move funds out, the coin should not be reused for secure cold storage.

The trust example is useful because it shows how an organizational holder can use a named custodian and segregated accounts. It should not be read as proof that all businesses use custodians, that a company needs segregated accounts, or that the arrangement settles how another entity should hold XRP. The cited sources do not establish a universal requirement to use third-party custody.

Treasury software is not the same as custody

A treasury-management platform can organize or display balances, apply valuations, record transactions, and support approval workflows. Those functions do not, on their own, establish who controls the keys. Custody—or the company’s key-control design—is a separate part of the arrangement.

Ripple’s product materials describe treasury functions for managing digital assets alongside fiat assets. In an April 1, 2026 announcement, Ripple said its Digital Asset Accounts and Unified Treasury capabilities had launched. Ripple described XRP and RLUSD balances appearing within a shared account structure with cash, real-time fiat valuations, automated transaction records, and connections to multiple digital-asset custodians. These are Ripple’s descriptions of its own offerings, not a general definition of an XRP treasury. Read Ripple’s April 1, 2026 announcement.

The distinction matters in practice: a platform might present or record balances while a custodian, or a company-controlled key arrangement, governs access to the assets. Ripple’s announcement describes both native accounts and connections to multiple custodians, so “treasury software” and “custody” should not be treated as interchangeable terms. A business evaluating a service should identify which functions the platform performs and who actually controls the keys.

Ripple said availability varies by geography and that different Ripple entities may provide services depending on product and location. A company considering a platform should verify current availability and terms for its jurisdiction and determine which entity provides each service. Ripple’s treasury-management page describes its own offering; it does not establish that every company needs that product or any specific platform.

Choosing a personal wallet setup

An individual deciding how to hold XRP is choosing between direct key control and reliance on a provider. A non-custodial wallet provides direct control but makes the user responsible for keeping keys and recovery information secure. A custodial service may simplify account recovery, but the provider controls the keys and can set platform limits.

A hardware wallet is a physical-device category for self-custody. XRPL documentation describes hardware wallets as devices that store keys and can be disconnected when not in use. Before selecting a device, check that it currently supports XRP and understand its recovery process. A hardware wallet does not eliminate the need to safeguard recovery information. The XRPL guide’s explanation of wallet types and key storage can help frame that choice; compatibility and availability are product-specific.

There is no single hardware-wallet recommendation established here. Confirm current XRP compatibility for the specific device and understand what you would need to do if it were lost or damaged. The physical device is one part of self-custody; it does not transfer responsibility for recovery information to the XRP Ledger or guarantee that a provider can restore access.

Questions a company should settle before holding XRP

There is no single custody arrangement established here as mandatory for every company. A vendor’s self-custody software and a trust’s third-party custody arrangement illustrate different models, not a universal requirement. Before adopting one, a company should resolve the following with its legal, accounting, and security advisers:

  • Key control: Who controls the keys—the company, a custodian, or both under a documented arrangement?
  • Approvals: Who can initiate and approve transfers, and how are exceptions recorded?
  • Recovery: What happens if credentials are lost, an authorized employee is unavailable, or a provider is disrupted?
  • Records: How will XRP balances and transactions be valued, recorded, and reconciled?
  • Risk: What risks come from the custodian, technology, geography, counterparties, and internal processes?
  • Fit: Does the proposed product support the organization’s jurisdiction and governance requirements?

These questions help separate a product’s feature list from the company’s actual control model. For example, a platform may support approvals and records without being the custodian. Likewise, describing a service as institutional does not answer how the company can recover access during provider disruption or which employees have authority. Ask for the specific workflow and documented controls rather than infer them from a product category.

What current industry claims do—and do not—show

Ripple reported that its 2026 survey of more than 1,000 global finance leaders found that 72% said they must offer a digital-asset solution to remain competitive. This is a result reported by Ripple about its own survey; it is not an independent estimate of adoption and does not show that companies need XRP specifically. Ripple’s announcement reports the survey figure.

Ripple executives also framed the shift in business terms. Renaat Ver Eecke, SVP of Ripple Treasury, said in the same announcement: “Digital assets have arrived at the CFO’s desk, and the question has shifted from whether to engage to how to do so advantageously without disrupting existing operations.” Mark Johnson, VP of Global Product at Ripple Treasury, described the product principle this way: “The design principle behind both capabilities is that digital assets should behave exactly like cash within the platform.” These are company statements about Ripple’s product and market view, not neutral findings about all companies.

The 72% figure concerns finance leaders’ stated view on offering a digital-asset solution; it is not a measure of companies already holding XRP, the prevalence of XRP treasuries, or a recommendation to hold XRP. Ripple’s quotations likewise describe the company’s product framing. Neither the survey nor these product claims establish how prevalent XRP treasuries are. They also do not determine the legal, regulatory, or accounting treatment of an individual company’s XRP. Those questions depend on the organization and its circumstances; the trust filing cited above should not be treated as a rule for operating businesses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an XRP treasury a special kind of XRP wallet?

No. “XRP treasury” describes XRP managed as part of an organization’s financial resources. It is not a special XRP token or a particular XRP Ledger wallet type.

What is the difference between a custodial and non-custodial XRP wallet?

With a non-custodial wallet, the holder controls the secret keys and is responsible for protecting and recovering them. With a custodial service, a provider controls the keys; it may offer account recovery, but the holder depends on its systems and policies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if I lose my non-custodial wallet keys?

The XRPL wallet guide says losing the keys leaves the user locked out, with no recovery option provided by the ledger. Keep recovery information secure and understand the chosen wallet’s recovery process before relying on it.

Does a company have to use a third-party custodian to hold XRP?

The cited sources do not establish one custody model as mandatory for every company. A company may consider a custodian, company-controlled infrastructure, or a defined combination, then assess the security, governance, legal, and accounting requirements for its own situation.

Does having an XRP treasury mean a company uses XRP for payments or earns a return?

No. A treasury balance alone does not establish how the company uses XRP or whether it earns income from it. A company’s own filing or announcement would be needed to support a claim about its holdings or use.

Can treasury software hold or control a company’s XRP keys?

Not necessarily. Treasury software may present balances, valuations, transaction records, and approvals, while a separate custodian or company-controlled key setup governs access. Identify those functions separately when evaluating a product.

The Bottom Line

An XRP treasury is the organizational management around an XRP holding—not a different asset or wallet type. A personal non-custodial wallet puts key control and recovery responsibility on the individual; a company treasury may add custody choices, approval policies, valuation, transaction records, and reconciliation. The right arrangement depends on the holder and its needs, so verify current product availability and key-control details rather than assuming one model applies to everyone.
