An Ultra High-Definition TV (UHDTV) is a television using an enhanced-resolution format, most commonly 4K UHD at 3840 × 2160 pixels or 8K UHD at 7680 × 4320 pixels. UHD describes resolution and related image formats; it does not, by itself, guarantee HDR performance or connected 4K streaming.
What does Ultra High-Definition TV mean?
Ultra High-Definition television is a family of television formats intended to improve the viewing experience through greater spatial resolution and a wider field of view. ITU-R describes UHDTV as a television application intended to provide an enhanced visual experience, particularly through a wide field of view. Its Report BT.2246-4 (2015) sets out the consumer-relevant 4K and 8K formats.

Is UHD the same as 4K?
In television shopping language, 4K UHD is the familiar UHD resolution tier, but UHD is a broader family that also includes 8K UHD. The terms are often paired as “4K UHD” because the 4K label identifies the format’s horizontal pixel count while UHD names the television format category.
CTA’s consumer definition for a 4K Ultra High-Definition display is more than a resolution label: it specifies at least 8 million active pixels, at least 3840 pixels horizontally and 2160 vertically, a native aspect ratio of 16:9 or wider, upconversion capability, specified HDMI input support, color processing, and a minimum bit depth. That is CTA’s consumer definition, not a claim that every UHD-related standard or jurisdiction uses an identical checklist. See CTA’s Television Technology Consumer Definitions.

What is the difference between 4K UHD and 8K UHD?
The difference is the number of pixels in the image. ITU-R Report BT.2246-4 (2015) gives these UHDTV formats:
| Format | Pixel dimensions |
|---|---|
| 4K UHD | 3840 × 2160 |
| 8K UHD | 7680 × 4320 |
These dimensions are clearer than a phrase such as “four times the detail,” which can refer ambiguously to linear resolution or total pixel count. The resolution tier alone does not establish overall picture quality.

Is UHD the same as HDR?
No. UHD is associated with resolution and image formats; HDR, or high dynamic range, concerns another aspect of the picture. The ITU described HDR-TV as a development building on UHDTV in its 2016 announcement on HDR-TV. A UHD label alone does not promise a particular HDR format, brightness performance, or HDR picture quality.
Does a UHD TV guarantee 4K streaming?
No. A display’s UHD resolution does not prove that the television has the network, decoding, and application functions needed for connected 4K video. CTA’s separate Connected 4K UHD definition adds IP video decoding, networking, and application services to its 4K UHD display criteria; consult the CTA consumer definitions for the criteria.

To watch a 4K stream, the content and the delivery and playback path also need to support 4K. Check the television’s connected playback capabilities and the requirements of the specific service or device rather than treating “UHD” on the display as a streaming guarantee.

What should you check when comparing UHD TVs?
- Resolution: Confirm whether the display is 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) or 8K UHD (7680 × 4320).
- HDR: Check supported HDR formats and the display’s actual performance; UHD by itself does not establish either.
- Inputs and playback: Review input and playback capabilities for the devices and content you plan to use.
- Connected content: Confirm the platform can decode and access the UHD content you want to watch.
