On many Samsung Galaxy phones, the call earpiece sits at the top front and the external loudspeaker is on the bottom edge. Some models also use the top earpiece as a second speaker for stereo sound. Exact openings vary by model, so use your phone’s model-specific manual to identify them.
Where are the speakers on a Samsung phone?
The top-front receiver, often a narrow slit above the screen, is the earpiece you listen through during a regular call held to your ear. The external loudspeaker is commonly on the bottom edge and plays media, speakerphone audio, and other sounds. Samsung describes these as typical locations, not a universal layout for every Galaxy device. Samsung’s speaker guidance gives these general positions, while Samsung’s regional support page says speaker and microphone placement can vary by device.

Does the top earpiece also play sound?
Some Galaxy phones have stereo speakers: the bottom loudspeaker works with an upper speaker near the earpiece. The upper opening may be a slim slit rather than a large grille, and its appearance depends on the model. Samsung’s guidance on top-speaker audio behavior describes select phones, so do not assume every Galaxy has the same stereo arrangement.
How to identify the exact opening on your model
Do not assume every row of holes along the bottom is a speaker. A microphone, USB port, vent, or other opening may be nearby; Samsung notes that layouts differ. Look up your exact phone model in its printed or online user manual and use its device-layout diagram. For example, the Galaxy S23 series manual labels the speaker in a model-family diagram; that illustration is not a layout guide for every Samsung phone.

Why the top speaker may seem quiet or silent
A quiet upper speaker in one situation does not, by itself, establish a fault. On select Galaxy phones, Samsung says sound behavior can differ by audio type: ringtones and alarms may use both speakers only when the phone detects a flat surface, while short system sounds or notifications may end before the upper speaker’s volume increases. The upper speaker may also be disabled during a speakerphone call when the proximity sensor detects that the phone is near your face. These behaviors depend on the model and situation.
Samsung’s top-speaker guidance explains those use cases. Its call troubleshooting guidance also notes that a screen protector that does not fit the device can block the top receiver. Some models have air vents at the top or bottom; a case or film covering a vent can affect sound, and an opening that looks like a speaker may not be one.

What to check if sound is actually missing
Test the sound in the situation that concerns you—an ordinary call through the earpiece, a speakerphone call, or media playback—rather than relying on a single ringtone or notification. Then check for simple obstructions and settings:

- Remove a third-party case, film, skin, or accessory that may cover an opening or redirect sound.
- Turn Bluetooth off to rule out audio being routed to a connected device.
- Play audio and raise the volume; restart the phone and test again.
- If the phone is wet, pat the earpiece, bottom microphone, external speaker, and USB port dry with a clean, soft cloth. Samsung advises rinsing salt water with fresh water and drying the phone thoroughly.
These are external checks, not instructions to open or repair the phone. If sound remains missing, consult Samsung support with your exact model and the audio situation you tested.
