An RTMP destination is the live-stream platform’s receiving endpoint: its server URL tells your encoder where to send a broadcast, and its stream key identifies and authorizes that stream. Get both values from the platform’s live setup, enter them in the encoder’s matching fields, and keep the key secret. For YouTube, choose its RTMPS address when your encoder supports it; RTMPS encrypts the connection.
What an RTMP destination contains
RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol. In a live-stream workflow, the encoder prepares the broadcaster’s audio and video signal and pushes it to an ingest server operated by the platform. The destination is that receiving endpoint—not a video source or a viewer-facing page. Twitch describes the broadcast traveling from an encoder to Twitch’s ingest subsystem over RTMP (Twitch developer guide).

- Server URL: points the encoder to the platform’s ingest system.
- Stream key: a platform-assigned value associated with the stream. Twitch says its key uniquely identifies and authorizes a stream, so anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Treat it as a password.
- Encoder: software such as OBS Studio, Streamlabs, or Xsplit, or compatible hardware, that sends the live signal to the destination.
Some encoders provide separate server and key fields. Others accept a combined address. Follow the field labels in your encoder: a server-URL field usually expects the endpoint alone, not the key pasted into it.
Where to find the URL and stream key
YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select the stream or scheduled event you intend to broadcast.
- Open the stream settings. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. If you want RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS address specifically; do not assume it is identical to the default RTMP URL. YouTube’s help page documents this setup: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- In your encoder, select its YouTube RTMPS preset if one is available. Otherwise, put the copied address and key in the corresponding fields.
For API-based integrations, YouTube exposes separate ingestion fields: cdn.ingestionInfo.ingestionAddress for RTMP and cdn.ingestionInfo.rtmpsIngestionAddress for RTMPS. The stream name is provided separately; an integration may combine the URL and stream name as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME if its format calls for it (YouTube LiveStreams API).

Twitch
Twitch assigns a stream key that can be retrieved from the broadcaster dashboard. Its documented destination form is rtmp://<ingest-server>/app/<stream-key>[?bandwidthtest=true]. The ingest server identifies a Twitch receiver; use Twitch’s current assigned or recommended endpoint rather than copying a URL or key from another platform. The optional bandwidthtest=true parameter is for a bandwidth test with Twitch Inspector; it disables live viewing and is not part of an ordinary public broadcast (Twitch developer guide).
How to use an RTMP destination in OBS or another encoder
- Create or choose the platform stream. Select the live stream or event in the platform’s control area before configuring the encoder. This ensures you copy credentials for the broadcast you mean to send.
- Copy the platform’s own endpoint and key. Do not substitute a URL from another service, another event, or an old configuration. Platforms use different ingest addresses and key formats.
- Open the encoder’s streaming settings. In OBS Studio, open Settings and then Stream. Select the matching service preset where available. If the encoder instead offers a custom destination, choose that and enter the supplied values.
- Fill the matching fields. Put the server URL in the server field and the key in the stream-key field. If the encoder has one combined destination field, follow its instructions for joining the values; YouTube API integrations may use
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME, but separate fields are common. - Start streaming and check reception. Start the encoder, then use the platform’s preview or stream-health panel to confirm that data is arriving and to review any configuration warnings. An encoder saying it is connected does not by itself prove the platform is receiving a healthy signal.
- Protect the key. Do not show it in a screen recording, stream, screenshot, or public post. If it is exposed, refresh or reset it using the platform’s key-management controls, then update the encoder with the replacement. Twitch explicitly advises broadcasters not to share their key and provides a refresh control.
RTMP or RTMPS: which should you use?
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection between the encoder and ingest service. For a typical YouTube software-encoder setup, use YouTube’s RTMPS preset and address when supported. YouTube’s guidance specifies port 443 for RTMPS and notes that API-level clients must handle the server hostname correctly in the TLS SNI handshake (YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide).

| YouTube ingest option | Encryption | Codecs listed by YouTube | Latency and use |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Unencrypted | H.264 | Suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency ingestion. |
| RTMPS | Encrypted (TLS/SSL) | H.264 | Suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency ingestion. |
| HLS | Encrypted | H.264 and HEVC | Segment-based and generally higher latency; may suit use cases that benefit from its codec support. |
| DASH | Encrypted | H.264 and VP9 | Segment-based and generally higher latency; may suit use cases that benefit from its codec support. |
This comparison reflects YouTube’s published ingest-protocol information, not every platform. HLS or DASH may be useful for some higher-resolution or premium workflows, but they are not drop-in substitutes unless both the platform and encoder support the protocol and provide the appropriate endpoint (YouTube encoder setup; YouTube ingest protocol comparison). Twitch’s cited documentation describes its RTMP destination format; it does not establish Twitch RTMPS support.

Why an RTMP destination may not connect
- Wrong platform, stream, or key: Re-copy both values from the current event’s live setup. A Twitch key and YouTube endpoint are not interchangeable, and an old event’s credentials may not point to the intended stream.
- Protocol mismatch: If you selected RTMPS, confirm the address begins with
rtmps://and that the encoder is configured for RTMPS—not plainrtmp://. - Incorrect port: YouTube’s RTMPS instructions specify port 443. Check the encoder’s port setting if the connection times out or an SSL error appears.
- Encoder has no RTMPS support: YouTube recommends verifying that the encoder supports RTMPS. If it does not, use a supported method in line with YouTube’s current instructions instead of forcing an incompatible URL.
- TLS certificate or SNI handling fails: API-level clients need correct TLS certificate handling and the server hostname in the SNI handshake. A correctly copied URL can still fail if the client’s TLS setup is wrong.
- Data arrives but the stream is unhealthy: Check the platform’s stream-health status and configuration warnings. This can distinguish an endpoint connection from an audio, video, or encoder-configuration issue.
- Key has been exposed: Refresh it in the platform’s controls and replace the old value in the encoder before going live again.
Or let it run in the cloud
An RTMP destination is still needed when an encoder sends a live signal. If what you want is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
