What Is an RSS Feed and How Does It Work?

An RSS feed is an XML list of site updates. Learn how readers retrieve feeds, how to subscribe, and what RSS does for podcasts.

An RSS feed is a web address that serves a structured XML list of a website’s updates. Add the feed’s URL to an RSS reader and it can gather new headlines, summaries, and links from that site alongside updates from other sources.

How RSS feeds work

  1. A publisher provides a feed URL. The feed is an XML document describing recent updates. In RSS 2.0, it contains a channel and one or more items.
  2. A reader retrieves the feed. An RSS reader, also called a newsreader or aggregator, checks the URLs you follow and presents their entries together. The RSS specification includes an optional ttl value, expressed in minutes, that can act as a caching or refresh hint; readers decide how and when to check feeds.
  3. You read an entry or follow its link. An item may include a title, description, publication date, identifier, and link. The link often leads to the full article, but an item may also contain fuller text. Not every feed includes full articles, and readers do not all support optional features in the same way.

The RSS Advisory Board describes RSS as “a Web content syndication format.” Read the RSS 2.0 specification for the format’s channel, item, and extension rules.

RSS terms to know

  • Feed: The XML document a publisher makes available at a URL.
  • Reader, newsreader, or aggregator: Software or a service that retrieves feeds and displays their updates.
  • Channel: Feed-level information about the source.
  • Item: An individual update, such as an article or podcast episode. RSS 2.0 items commonly use fields such as title, link, description, publication date, identifier, and an optional media enclosure. An item must include at least a title or a description.
  • XML: The document format RSS uses. The National Park Service expands RSS as “Really Simple Syndication.”

How to subscribe to a feed

  1. Choose an RSS reader. Readers may be web services, mobile apps, or software integrated into a browser.
  2. On the website you want to follow, look for an RSS or XML link or a feed icon. Some sites publish separate feeds for different sections.
  3. Open the feed link if necessary, then copy its address from the browser’s address bar.
  4. In your reader, use its add-feed or subscribe control and paste in the feed URL. The exact control varies by reader.
  5. Check the reader for entries from the new source. The reader may show a headline, summary, and link, or more of the item’s content.

The Library of Congress RSS guide explains how readers collect updates from multiple sites. A March 2026 Le Monde guide names Flipboard, Feedly, Netvibes, Inoreader, and NewsBlur as examples of readers; that list is not a ranking or endorsement. To choose one, consider whether you want browser or installed access, which devices you use, whether a free option is enough, and whether you want organization or saving features. Reader capabilities vary, and the available sources do not provide a current comparative evaluation.

RSS and podcasts

Podcast feeds use RSS items to describe episodes and can point to media files through enclosure information. Podcast platforms may impose additional requirements on feeds submitted to them; those requirements are not rules for every RSS feed.

For submission to Apple Podcasts, Apple requires an RSS 2.0 feed that is publicly accessible and includes at least one episode and artwork. Each episode must have a unique enclosure with a URL, length, and type, as well as a GUID that never changes. See Apple’s podcast RSS feed requirements.

RSS compared with email subscriptions

RSS updates arrive in a reader; email subscriptions deliver messages to an inbox. The Library of Congress says that in many cases it offers the same information by either method, though some updates may be available through only one route. Choose the inbox if that is where you prefer updates, or an RSS reader if you want to collect feeds separately from your email.
