To regenerate a WordPress PDF preview, first confirm the server can render PDFs, then use a tool that explicitly supports existing PDF attachments. WordPress creates a first-page image preview separately from ordinary image thumbnails; its built-in rendering path requires Imagick, ImageMagick, and Ghostscript. For older PDFs, PDF Thumbnail Generator specifically documents regeneration of missing or existing previews.
How WordPress creates PDF thumbnails
Since WordPress 4.7, core can generate an image representation of a PDF’s first page for use in the Media Library and attachment screens. This is different from resizing a JPEG or other raster image. When a PDF-capable editor is available, WordPress documents generated sizes as full, thumbnail, medium, and large; the full-size representation is rendered at 128 dpi. Those capabilities do not mean every server is configured to render PDFs.
WordPress core’s documented Imagick route requires the PHP Imagick extension, ImageMagick, and Ghostscript. If the necessary support is unavailable or generation fails, WordPress can save the PDF attachment without preview metadata. See the WordPress Core explanation of PDF support.
Regenerate an existing PDF preview
- Check the attachment. In the WordPress dashboard, open Media → Library and locate the PDF. Confirm that the file is present and opens; distinguish a missing or stale preview from a damaged PDF or an unrelated image displayed on a page.
- Verify the rendering stack. Ask your host or server administrator to confirm that Imagick, ImageMagick, and Ghostscript are installed and available to the site’s PHP environment. The PDF Thumbnail Generator plugin also lists the Imagick extension as a requirement. A server may have some components installed without exposing them to the WordPress runtime.
- Choose a PDF-aware regeneration method. Install and activate PDF Thumbnail Generator from the WordPress.org Plugin Directory, then use its available workflow to regenerate the target PDF’s thumbnail. The plugin listing says it handles missing or existing PDF thumbnails. Its documented output is a PNG alongside the PDF—for example,
example.pdf.pngbesideexample.pdfin the uploads directory. This is a generated file, not a separate image attachment in the Media Library. - Test one file. Regenerate a single PDF first. Check its Media Library preview and any attachment or page where the preview should appear. If it works, proceed with other affected PDFs using the plugin’s workflow.
- If it fails, stop before a large batch. Check the plugin’s reported error and ask the host or developer to inspect renderer availability, PHP/server errors, or timeouts. Repeating a batch will not fix a missing rendering dependency.
Which regeneration option should you use?
| Option | PDF support | Access and scope | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PDF Thumbnail Generator | Its listing explicitly describes regeneration of missing or existing PDF thumbnails. | WordPress dashboard; suitable when you need a PDF-specific workflow. | Requires Imagick; output is documented as a PNG file beside the PDF. Plugin capability is based on its directory listing, not independent performance testing. |
wp media regenerate |
WP-CLI documents attachment thumbnail regeneration, but its examples focus on images and do not specifically promise rebuilding PDF previews. | Requires command-line access. You can specify attachment IDs or image sizes and use flags such as --only-missing and --skip-delete. |
Treat it as a testable alternative, not a guaranteed PDF-specific fix. Try one PDF attachment and confirm the result before relying on it for a batch. See the WP-CLI command reference. |
| Force Regenerate Thumbnails | The plugin documents PDF thumbnail generation support in its changelog. | Offers Tools-menu and Media Library list-view workflows for selected items or a single attachment. | Review the plugin’s current workflow and test one PDF first. Its listing describes thumbnail workflows; the PDF Thumbnail Generator listing is more explicit about regenerating existing or missing PDF thumbnails. See Force Regenerate Thumbnails. |
Using WP-CLI cautiously
The command documented by WP-CLI is:
wp media regenerate
You can limit processing to selected attachments by supplying their IDs, or specify an image size. The command also documents --only-missing, --skip-delete, and --delete-unknown. These options affect what attachments or generated files are processed, but they do not establish that the command will rebuild WordPress’s PDF first-page previews in every installation. Consult the official command documentation, test the target PDF, and inspect the result before applying it more broadly.

Troubleshoot a preview that remains missing
- Confirm the server has all required components. For core’s documented Imagick path, verify the Imagick PHP extension, ImageMagick, and Ghostscript together—not just that a plugin is installed.
- Check the specific error before retrying. Ask the host or developer to review server and PHP logs for rendering failures or timeouts. A failed core preview-generation attempt can leave the PDF saved without preview metadata.
- Check the expected output and display location. A PDF Thumbnail Generator output PNG beside the PDF does not mean WordPress has added a separate image attachment. Confirm the Media Library preview and the page or attachment display independently.
- Escalate persistent failures to the host. If the server cannot render PDFs, ask whether it can provide the required components in the site’s PHP environment before attempting another batch.
