Tor clients send traffic through a sequence of relays, with layers of encryption designed to separate knowledge of who is connecting from knowledge of where the traffic is going.
What does “onion router” mean?
The Tor Project describes relays as servers in its network and notes that “onion routers,” or “ORs,” is older terminology for them. In current explanations, Tor generally calls them relays. The name refers to their role in routing traffic through Tor; it does not mean an ordinary consumer router.

Tor is a distributed overlay network: its relays carry traffic between a Tor client and a destination. A client selects relays and builds a circuit through them. The “onion” metaphor describes the layers of encryption used along that route.

For ordinary browsing, Tor Browser describes a circuit made up of three relays. The client negotiates a separate key with each relay and wraps traffic in layers of encryption. As traffic moves through the circuit, each relay processes its own layer and forwards it to the next hop; a relay ordinarily knows only the relays immediately before and after it, not the complete route.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Entry guard: The first relay receives the connection from the user’s device. It can see that device connecting to Tor, but is not ordinarily given the final destination by its position in the circuit.
- Middle relay: This relay passes traffic between the entry and exit parts of the circuit without serving as the user-facing entry point or the public-Internet connection.
- Exit relay: For a connection to an ordinary website, the last relay connects to that public-Internet destination. The website sees a connection from the exit relay rather than the user’s ordinary IP address.
This separation is part of Tor’s privacy design, not a guarantee against every adversary, traffic-analysis method, or user mistake. The Tor Project explains both the protections and their limits in its overview of Tor’s privacy and anonymity protections.
Does every Tor connection use an exit relay?
No. An exit relay is used when Tor connects to a site on the ordinary public Internet. An onion service, reached through a .onion address, is available only over Tor, so the connection stays within the Tor network rather than leaving through a public-Internet exit relay. Tor says onion services can conceal the service’s location and provide end-to-end authentication and encryption properties. - Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
What privacy does an onion router provide—and what does it not?
Tor is designed to make it harder for a local observer to learn which sites a user visits and to keep an ordinary website from seeing the user’s usual IP address. Those are distinct protections: the entry guard sees the connection into Tor, while an ordinary destination receives a connection from an exit relay. Tor does not promise universal anonymity, and its protections do not resolve every privacy risk.
For ordinary websites, the exit relay connects to the destination. Tor routing alone should not be treated as a guarantee that application traffic is encrypted all the way to that website; use HTTPS when it is available. The Tor Project recommends Tor Browser for web access and warns that using other browsers over Tor can create deanonymization or information-leak risks. Its Tor Browser explanation describes how the browser works.

- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Is an onion router something you install?
Usually, a person who wants to browse with Tor uses Tor Browser; they do not need to buy an onion router. The term describes a relay server in the Tor network. People can operate relays, but that is a different activity from using Tor Browser to connect through the network.
Tor also documents bridges—relays not listed in the public directory—and pluggable transports, which can make Tor traffic harder to identify or block. Whether these help depends on the network and local conditions; they are not a guarantee of access wherever Tor is blocked.
