This editorial shortlist instead identifies eight models and builder offerings that explicitly address off-grid living, while distinguishing published equipment from optional or site-configured systems. Compare electricity, water, waste, climate needs, mobility and local placement rules—not solar panels alone.
How this shortlist is selected
The candidates below are included because their builders describe off-grid equipment, design features or custom systems relevant to remote living. They are not independently tested or officially ranked. Some have a few published capacities; others are configurable offerings without fixed system specifications. Ask each builder for a current, model-specific equipment list before comparing them.

Eight models and builder offerings to investigate
The Weston — The Tiny House Building Company (United States)
The builder describes this 18-foot trailer model with a 2,000-watt solar panel system and a 46-gallon freshwater holding tank. Listed features also include a battery bank, propane range, tankless water heater, dry-flush toilet, washer/dryer combo and split heat/AC. Fritz lists the Halcyon Lux at 33 ft × 8 ft 6 in × 13 ft 6 in and says it is certified as an RV to CSA Z240 RV for Canada and NFPA1192 RV for the United States. Coppia and custom tiny homes on wheels — Off Grid Tiny Houses (Victoria, Australia)
Off Grid Tiny Houses says its tiny homes on wheels comply with VSB1 and have VINs, double glazing, insulation in walls, floors and ceilings, and recessed gutters for rainwater catchment. Its page labels a pictured home “Coppia custom” but does not provide a complete specification for that home. The builder also says its construction site runs on its own off-grid solar setup and reports more than seven years of family use; that is the company’s account, not independent verification. Casa Tiny House models — Queensland, Australia
Casa Tiny House names the Flow, Driftway, Whisper, Harmony, Serenity, Sanctum and Ember models. Its FAQ says an off-grid design must address power, water catchment, toilet choice and greywater disposal. Solar installation is handled with an external company, and the builder says guttering is fitted on-site because of road-width restrictions. KYRAX off-grid-ready builds — Canada- and United States-facing offering
KYRAX describes three formats: a modular home on a foundation, a park model and a home on wheels. It says solar, battery storage, water collection and toilet choices are specified for the site and actual loads; its page does not confirm standard capacities. Tiny Custom House models — Mesa, Arizona
Tiny Custom House describes container and conventional-frame homes as off-grid capable, with elements such as solar, battery storage, water tanks, composting toilets and generator transfer switches possible. The page says its models are real floor plans it builds, but does not tie a named model to a complete off-grid package. Confirm which elements are included in the specific plan and quote. What “off-grid” needs to cover
A home is not self-sufficient simply because it has solar panels. Electricity, water and waste each need a workable plan. Tiny Homes NZ describes a typical setup as solar with battery storage, water collection and filtration, and either a composting toilet or self-contained septic system. Power: size for loads and the darker season
Ask for the panel rating, usable battery capacity, inverter details, expected daily consumption and backup plan. Tiny Homes NZ warns that winter brings shorter days and less reliable sun, and says batteries and backup generation should be sized for darker months. A published panel wattage—such as the Weston’s 2,000-watt system—does not by itself reveal battery capacity, autonomy or suitability for your appliances. Tiny Homes NZ’s winter sizing guidance

Water and waste: specify the whole route
For water, establish whether a home includes a tank, rainwater catchment, filtration and any necessary pumping equipment; capacity and local rainfall affect how useful the system will be. For waste, confirm the toilet type and how greywater and other wastewater will be handled at the destination. A toilet choice alone does not answer whether the site has an acceptable wastewater plan.
Insulation, heat and mobility
Cold-weather suitability depends on the home’s envelope and heating plan as well as its power system. Fritz describes spray foam and ZIP/ZIP-R on the Halcyon Lux, while Off Grid Tiny Houses says its homes have double glazing and insulation in walls, floors and ceilings. Those are builder-described features, not comparative performance tests. Also determine whether the house is intended for a foundation, a park-model setting or a road-going trailer; those forms can affect transport, installation and where it may be placed.
Check placement and consent before buying
Off-grid equipment does not exempt a home from local building, land-use, water or wastewater requirements. Tiny Homes NZ’s discussion is specific to New Zealand: it says consent considerations can depend on size, whether the home is on a foundation or a certified trailer chassis, the district plan, and separate water and wastewater requirements. Its page mentions a threshold of up to 60 m² in connection with consent criteria; that figure is not a universal rule and should not be treated as legal advice. Elsewhere, ask the destination authority about the particular parcel and dwelling format before committing. A builder’s “road legal,” RV certification or off-grid-ready description does not, by itself, establish that a home can be occupied on a chosen property.
