In current Microsoft terminology, the closest equivalent is an ActiveX control: a COM-based component that uses OLE functionality. Its available features depend on both the control and the application hosting it. Microsoft classifies ActiveX as legacy technology and advises against using it for new development.
What does “OLE custom control” mean?
“OLE custom control” is a historical or informal name for a programmable component that participates in OLE hosting. Microsoft’s current documentation describes the related ActiveX control model; it does not present “OLE custom control” as a separate contemporary technology.

An ActiveX control is a reusable component based on the Component Object Model (COM). An OLE-aware application, called a container, can host it as an embedded element or programmable component. Controls can be used for interface elements such as buttons, or for functions such as database access, data monitoring, and graphing. The exact capabilities vary by control.
How does a control work with its host?
The host provides the environment in which the control operates. Depending on the control and the container’s support, the host can display the control, position it, interact with it, call its methods, set or read its properties, and receive events it raises. A control may also save state so that its property values can be restored later.

These capabilities are not automatic or universal. A container must be designed to recognize ActiveX controls, and containers can support different optional features. A control may therefore work in one host but lack some functionality in another.
Interfaces and capability checks
Microsoft’s control-container guidelines identify IUnknown as the minimum interface for an ActiveX control. Other interfaces are optional. A container should use QueryInterface to check whether a control supports an interface before relying on it. If a required interface is unavailable, the application should handle that limitation gracefully or offer an alternative where possible.

- 【Instant Feedback From Sound】The training footpad accurately detects weight transfer, helps you sense the proper force sequence through left/right foot sounds, and determines whether to step fast or slow based on sound duration.
- 【Ground Reaction Force】By using the Golf training foot pads training, control the swing rhythm, enhance the reaction force on the ground, improve the sense of timing, enhance rotation, and accurately judge whether the center of gravity is transferred correctly.
- 【Improve Club Head Speed and Stability】Improve balance, reduce swing, improve stability, and hit the ball more solidly through training. Make you more stable and efficient when swinging, and improve the speed and consistency of the swing.
- 【Compact & Portable】Small size and light weight, you can learn how to use the ground to increase power when swinging anytime and anywhere. Made of sturdy and durable soft rubber material, it ensures its durability.
- 【A Good Helper For Coaches】The sound allows coaches to more accurately understand the problems of students' practice, and also allows students to judge whether the force applied to the soles of their feet is accurate, thus improving practice efficiency.
What persistence means
Persistence is the ability to save and restore a control’s state, such as its property values. The container supplies or manages access to the storage used for this purpose; the control does not independently select or acquire the host’s storage medium.

Is an OCX the same as an ActiveX control?
Not exactly. .ocx is a file extension associated with many ActiveX controls, but the extension alone does not establish what a file does, whether it is compatible with a particular host, or whether it is safe. Microsoft’s Excel support documentation describes a workflow for registering an ActiveX control file with an .ocx or .dll extension; that instruction does not mean every such file should be registered.

Is ActiveX still supported?
ActiveX remains relevant to some existing Windows software, but Microsoft describes it as legacy technology and says it should not be used for new development. That is a development recommendation, not a claim that every Windows application has stopped supporting every control.
For Windows desktop versions of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Visio in Microsoft 365 and Office 2016 or later, Microsoft says ActiveX controls are disabled by default. Office for Mac and Office on the web do not support them. These statements apply to the named Office products and platforms, not to all Windows applications. For new Office solutions, Microsoft suggests alternatives such as Form Controls and Office Add-ins.

How should you evaluate an existing OLE or ActiveX control?
Before relying on a control, check the specific host, platform, and task rather than assuming the control will behave the same everywhere.

Best Value
- Match interfaces: Identify the COM interfaces and component features the control needs, then verify that the container supports them.
- Confirm behavior: Check which properties, methods, events, display functions, and persistence behavior the control actually implements.
- Check current platform support: Confirm whether the target application supports ActiveX and whether its security defaults allow the control to run.
- Consider a modern alternative: For new work, determine whether a supported option such as an Office Add-in or Form Control meets the same requirement.
