Can an iOS Keyboard Extension Identify the App Using It?

Apple documents text-input APIs for iOS keyboards, not a supported way to retrieve the current host app’s bundle identifier. The containing app can identify itself, but that is not the host.

No—not through a documented, supported custom-keyboard API. An iOS keyboard extension can interact with text input, but Apple does not document a way for it to retrieve the bundle identifier of the app currently hosting it. The containing app can identify itself; that is a different app role.

Why the keyboard cannot identify its host app

A custom keyboard is an extension included in a containing app, but iOS launches the extension in its own process. The app that supplies the keyboard is not necessarily the app in which a person is typing. Apple’s custom keyboard documentation describes this extension model and its text-input role.

The documented interaction surface is UITextDocumentProxy, which lets a keyboard work with text—for example, inserting text and accessing selected text where available. That is not a general-purpose interface for inspecting the host app. Apple’s Custom Keyboard guide does not document a supported current-host bundle-ID lookup.

What the containing app can identify

The containing app can read its own bundle identifier because it is the app that includes the keyboard extension. That identifier identifies the keyboard’s containing app, not whichever unrelated app is currently displaying the keyboard.

Similarly, UIApplicationKeyboardExtensionPointIdentifier identifies the custom-keyboard extension point; it is not the bundle identifier of the host app. See Apple’s extension-point identifier documentation.

Does Allow Full Access change this?

No. In its default configuration, a keyboard extension runs in a restricted sandbox, without network access and without write access to the containing app’s shared group container. Apple documents read-only access to that shared container in the default setup. A keyboard can request open access by setting RequestsOpenAccess to true; the user must then enable “Allow Full Access” in Settings. Apple describes added capabilities such as network access and shared-container use with the containing app, but does not document a current-host bundle-ID API as part of open access. See Configuring open access for a custom keyboard.

  • Can't Connect the Bluetooth? Please reset the keyboard and then reconnect the Bluetooth: 1. Turn on the keyboarad; 2. Press and hold the first and the last key at the top row of the keyboard until all indicators start flashing; 3. Bluetooth light flickers quickly, auto entering Bluetooth pairing mode (If not, press Fn + 1 or 2); 4. Search and find "Wireless keyboard".
  • Multi-OS Compatible: The keyboard is widely compatible with Android, Windows and iOS devices. Also the basic typing function works with other OS devices such as fire tablets.
  • Connect 2 Devices: Seamless switching between 2 Bluetooth devices (iOS/Android/Windows) with single-tap transitions (Fn+"1"/ "2").

Shared-container access concerns communication with the keyboard’s own containing app. It does not reveal the identity of a separate app that happens to be hosting the keyboard. Open access also changes the keyboard’s privacy and security posture: Apple cautions that keyboard input is sensitive and should be used only for purposes obvious to users.

Do not confuse this with ExtensionFoundation host identity

Apple documents an AppExtensionIdentity that can include a host app’s bundle identifier in the context of discovering extensions through ExtensionFoundation. That documentation describes a different extension-discovery model; it does not establish that a custom keyboard can identify its current host. See Discovering app extensions from your app.

How to design a feature that depends on host identity

If a feature needs to behave differently depending on which app is using the keyboard, treat current-host identification as unsupported by the reviewed custom-keyboard APIs. Do not infer identity from text-field behavior or rely on undocumented interfaces. Instead, consider whether the feature can work through a user-selected configuration or through app-specific functionality in the containing app. If the design requires open access, account for the user’s explicit Settings choice and explain clearly why the keyboard needs the added access.
