An M3U8 file is a UTF-8 text playlist used by HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). It is usually an index—not the video itself—that points a compatible player to media segments or to other playlists. To watch an M3U8 live stream, get an authorized, current playlist URL and open it in an HLS-capable player or webpage; for a live feed, the player refreshes the playlist as new segments become available.
What an M3U8 file contains
An M3U8 playlist contains text lines: URIs that identify media segments or other playlists, plus tags that describe how those resources should be interpreted. The playlist and the video data are therefore usually separate. The format is specified in RFC 8216; Apple also explains the playlist-and-segment model in its HLS overview.

The extension signals the playlist format, but an M3U8 suffix alone does not guarantee that a URL is reachable or that every device can play it. The client must be able to retrieve the playlist and its referenced resources, and support the stream’s codecs and HLS features.

A master playlist can support playback choices as network conditions change, but switching behavior depends on the player and the stream. Apple describes HLS as adapting playback to available wired or wireless connection speed in its HLS developer documentation.

How an M3U8 live stream works
- The player requests the playlist over HTTP.
- It parses the tags and retrieves the listed segments—or, if given a master playlist, selects a media playlist and then retrieves its segments.
- For a live media playlist that does not include
EXT-X-ENDLIST, the client reloads the playlist to discover newly available segments while playback continues.
RFC 8216 defines the update behavior for live media playlists, including a requirement for the server to make a new playlist version available within the specified reload window. That is a producer-side protocol rule, not a setting a viewer normally needs to change. The RFC says a typical HLS target duration is 10 seconds; this is not a guarantee that every segment is 10 seconds long or that a stream has a particular latency.
How do I open an M3U8 file?
First determine whether you have a local playlist file or a URL supplied by a broadcaster or service. If you open the file in a text editor, seeing tags and links is normal: that is the playlist’s contents, not proof that the video is broken.

- Get an authorized playlist URL. Use a URL provided by the broadcaster or streaming service. A playlist does not grant access to its content; referenced segments and any child playlists must also be reachable.
- Choose an HLS-capable player. Open the URL in a media player that supports HLS, or use it as the source in a webpage video player that supports HLS on the target platform. Apple’s basic HLS deployment guidance documents an HTML video-source approach.
- Allow a live playlist to refresh. A live player needs to reload the media playlist to find new segments. Do not treat the initial playlist response as the complete live video.
Playback depends on the player, platform, codecs, playlist tags, and access rules. The presence of an .m3u8 URL is not a universal compatibility guarantee.

How do I play an M3U8 live stream in a webpage?
For a basic HLS deployment, Apple documents using a playlist URL as an HTML video source. Whether that works directly in a particular browser or device depends on its HLS and codec support; some implementations may need a player that supplies the required HLS handling.

This minimal example does not provide a compatibility layer, authentication, error handling, or a custom playback interface. Consult Apple’s deployment guide for its basic web-playback guidance.
What a publisher must get right
- Playlist encoding and identification: RFC 8216 requires UTF-8. A playlist can be identified by a
.m3u8or.m3upath suffix or by an accepted playlist MIME type; Apple recommendsapplication/vnd.apple.mpegurl. - Syntax: HLS tags are case-sensitive under RFC 8216. Malformed tags or incorrect encoding can prevent parsing.
- Reachable resources: Every segment and referenced child playlist must be available to the client, subject to any authorization or expiration rules.
- Live updates: A live playlist must continue to be updated according to the HLS rules so clients can retrieve new segments. The target duration must not change during playlist updates, as specified by RFC 8216.
- Compatible media: The client must support the stream’s codecs and HLS features. An otherwise valid playlist may still fail on a player that cannot decode its media.

Troubleshooting M3U8 playback
