You can turn a back catalog into a continuous YouTube Live stream by having an encoder play local video files or a playlist and send the output to a live stream created in YouTube Studio. In OBS, use a looping Media Source for one video or a VLC Video source for a playlist. For a cloud option, StreamNeo plays uploaded videos on YouTube without keeping a computer or home connection running.
A 24/7 broadcast is an operating setup—not a YouTube playlist setting or an uptime guarantee. The playback source, encoder, power, internet connection, YouTube ingest and monitoring all matter.

Before you start: eligibility, rights and the right approach
Check YouTube Live access
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling a channel’s first live stream can take up to 24 hours, so do this before planning a launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming access guidance.

Confirm that you own or have the necessary rights to every video, image, music track and other element in each recording. A video being in your back catalog—or having been uploaded before—does not establish permission to rebroadcast it live. Keep records of licenses, and ask rights holders whether they need to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist for live use.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can lead to a warning or placeholder image, and the stream may be interrupted or terminated if the material remains. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Decide what should stay running
With a local OBS setup, the computer, media files, power and internet connection must remain available. A hardware encoder is another route YouTube recognizes; a cloud encoder or studio may also be an option, but verify that a particular service supports your uploaded catalog, continuous playback, recovery and archive needs before relying on it. None of these approaches should be treated as “set and forget.”
Set up a looping stream in OBS
1. Prepare and test the catalog
- Put the videos in a stable local folder, and avoid moving or renaming files after setting up the playlist.
- Choose the order deliberately. Test the transition between items, audio levels, and what happens when a file ends.
- OBS documents common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM, along with common audio formats. Confirm that your installed setup plays your files correctly before scheduling a long broadcast.
- For licensed third-party material, establish any required Content ID allowlisting before going public.
2. Configure playback for one file or a playlist
- For one video: In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene. Select the local file and enable Loop so playback starts again when it ends.
- For multiple videos: Install VLC if needed, then add a VLC Video source. Load the local files as a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. If VLC Video is missing from the source list, check that VLC is installed and compatible with your OBS installation.
- Arrange and preview the scene. Confirm that the video fits the canvas, audio is present, the playlist order is right and playback resumes as intended. OBS describes these source controls in its Media Sources documentation.
3. Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio into OBS’s stream configuration.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it, publish it or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Start streaming from OBS and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the broadcast public.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the connection workflow. An encoder converts video to a digital format for YouTube; OBS sends that output while your media source supplies the catalog playback.

4. Run an end-to-end test before launch
Use a private or unlisted test stream to verify the complete path from playback through OBS to YouTube. Check that the preview receives both video and audio, that looping works, and that a restart or interruption can be recovered without leaving a broken scene on air.
- Watch upload stability rather than assuming your connection can sustain a continuous stream.
- Check the computer’s power, thermals and storage, and make sure media files remain accessible.
- Confirm that you know how to restart OBS and reconnect the stream key if the encoder stops.
- Review Live Control Room stream health during the test and decide who will monitor the public broadcast.
5. Go public with a schedule and monitoring plan
Use a descriptive title and explain the programming rotation, including repeated content where relevant. Decide how you will handle outages, rights warnings, scheduled maintenance and viewer questions. Monitor the stream rather than assuming a successful launch means it will remain uninterrupted.
Choose a route for keeping the stream running
For a DIY setup, OBS on a local computer provides direct control over files and playlist behavior, but makes continuity dependent on the computer, power, storage and network. YouTube also recognizes standalone hardware encoders; compare supported inputs, monitoring and recovery controls before buying, since no particular model is established here.

Permission to stream does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. The policy update dated July 15, 2025 renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible. YouTube also reviews reused content: material repurposed without significant original commentary, substantive modification or educational or entertainment value may affect channel eligibility. The reused-content policy is separate from copyright permission, so a license alone does not guarantee monetization. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Eligible YouTube Partner Program creators can monetize live streams, subject to YouTube’s policies and the applicable modules. Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium revenue for live streams require the Watch Page Monetization Module. Eligibility, acceptance and earnings vary by account; looping a catalog does not ensure YPP acceptance or revenue. Details are in YouTube’s monetization options.
Plan for replay archives
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous session will be saved as one replay. If a replay matters, plan shorter sessions or a separate archive workflow, and confirm the current Studio controls for your chosen configuration before launch.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS does not show the VLC Video source | VLC is not installed or is incompatible with the OBS setup. | Install a compatible VLC version, restart OBS and check the source list again. |
| A video or playlist stops instead of looping | The source’s loop control is off, or the file path is unavailable. | Enable Loop for Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video, then verify the local files and paths. |
| YouTube receives no picture or audio | The encoder is not connected correctly, the wrong source is active, or the media source has no audible output. | Check the YouTube stream URL and key in OBS, preview the active scene, and confirm audio before starting a public stream. |
| The stream drops or becomes unstable | Upload connectivity, power, the host computer or platform ingest may have failed. | Check Live Control Room stream health, the internet connection and computer power; restart the encoder and confirm recovery with a test before relying on the setup. |
| YouTube warns about or interrupts the broadcast | A live scan may have identified third-party content. | Review the rights for the flagged material. If you have a license, ask the rights owner whether they must add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. |
| A long stream has no single complete replay | The session exceeded YouTube’s documented under-12-hour automatic archive threshold. | Use shorter sessions or a separate recording/archive process, and verify current Studio behavior for your setup. |
