What Is an LTPS TFT LCD? The Backplane Technology Explained

LTPS names the polycrystalline-silicon TFT backplane in an LCD—not its liquid-crystal mode or a guarantee of picture quality.

An LTPS TFT LCD is a liquid-crystal display whose thin-film transistors use low-temperature polycrystalline silicon in the backplane. That material gives the transistors higher electron mobility than the amorphous silicon commonly used in LCD backplanes, enabling faster circuit operation and dense layouts. LTPS describes how the pixels are controlled—not the liquid-crystal viewing mode or a promise of better overall picture quality.

What does LTPS TFT LCD mean?

LTPS stands for low-temperature polycrystalline silicon. TFT means thin-film transistor, and LCD means liquid-crystal display. In an LTPS TFT LCD, the active layer of the thin-film transistors that control the pixels is made from polycrystalline silicon. Samsung Display describes LTPS as a TFT technology that improves electron mobility by modifying amorphous silicon (a-Si): Samsung Display’s LTPS glossary.

These terms identify different parts of a display: LCD names the panel technology, while LTPS identifies the transistor backplane material and process. The transistors regulate current to set pixel brightness.

How is an LTPS backplane made?

The process begins with amorphous silicon, which is crystallized into polycrystalline silicon, commonly using laser heating. Samsung Display explains that the process temperature is below 450°C to avoid deforming the glass substrate: Samsung Display’s explanation of LTPS processing.

“Low temperature” is relative to high-temperature polysilicon processing; it does not mean the process involves no heat. The resulting polycrystalline structure has higher electron mobility than amorphous silicon.

What does LTPS change in a display?

Higher electron mobility lets transistor circuits operate faster and makes it easier to provide current within a short time. It also allows denser circuitry. Those capabilities can help a panel achieve higher resolution and a better aperture ratio—the proportion of a pixel area available to transmit light—than an amorphous-silicon-backplane LCD. LTPS can also make it practical to integrate driver circuits into the backplane, helping reduce a display’s form factor. Corning discusses these backplane capabilities in its overview of display technology.

These are design capabilities, not guarantees that every LTPS panel has better color, contrast, viewing angles, or refresh rate than every panel using another backplane. Those results depend on the complete panel design and its other components.

LTPS versus amorphous-silicon backplanes

Both LTPS and a-Si can serve as TFT backplane technologies for LCDs. Their main difference is the trade-off between transistor performance and manufacturing complexity. Corning describes the potential advantages of LTPS, while a technical overview discusses its manufacturing trade-offs: Corning on display technology; Electronics Notes on LTPS.

Comparison LTPS Amorphous silicon (a-Si)
Electron mobility and circuit speed Higher mobility supports faster transistor operation. Lower mobility than LTPS.
Resolution and aperture ratio Can support higher resolution and a better aperture ratio in active-matrix LCDs. Does not offer the same stated LTPS capability.
Circuit integration Driver ICs can be integrated into the backplane, supporting a smaller form factor. That integration advantage is not established for a-Si here.
Manufacturing More complex and costly to manufacture. Simpler processing; practical where uniformity and scaling to larger displays matter.
Common application emphasis Associated with high-performance, relatively small displays, including handheld panels. Useful where simpler processing and larger display scaling are priorities.

Is LTPS the same as IPS or OLED?

No. LTPS and IPS describe different specifications. LTPS is the TFT backplane technology; IPS describes an arrangement of liquid crystals in an LCD. A screen can therefore be described using both labels without them meaning the same thing.

OLED and LCD, meanwhile, refer to different display technologies. LTPS identifies a backplane approach and should not be treated as another name for either LCD or OLED. Keep the panel technology, transistor backplane, and liquid-crystal arrangement separate when reading a display specification.

What to look for in a screen specification

“LTPS TFT LCD” tells you that the display is an LCD with an LTPS transistor backplane. It does not, by itself, tell you the screen’s resolution, size, color performance, refresh rate, or viewing mode. Check those characteristics separately when comparing devices.
