It is a per-request capacity—not the model’s training corpus and not a guarantee that it will remember details later.
What is a context window?
A context window is the working space available to a language model while it processes a request. Anthropic defines it as “all the text a language model can reference when generating a response, including the response itself.” The window can include your prompt, earlier messages in the conversation, tool instructions and results, and the model’s generated answer. Depending on the model and interface, reasoning tokens and multimodal content such as images or audio can also use capacity. The precise accounting is product-specific.

This is different from training data: a model’s training corpus is material used to build the model, while the context window concerns what the model can reference during a particular request. It is also not durable memory. Information that is outside the current context—or no longer included by the application—may not be available to the model in a later request.

How many tokens fit in a context window?
There is no single limit for all LLMs. Limits vary by model, version, and product surface, and providers may specify input and output capacity separately. For example, Google’s Gemini 3 developer guide, updated September 23, 2026, lists a 1 million-token input window and up to 64,000 output tokens for the Gemini 3 models covered by that guide. Those are Google’s product specifications, not an industry standard or an independent benchmark. Google Gemini 3 developer guide

Google says many Gemini models have context windows of 1 million tokens or more, while warning that specifications vary by model. Anthropic’s current context-window documentation lists up to 1 million tokens for some named Claude models and 200,000 for others. These vendor limits can change, so check the documentation for the exact model and product you plan to use. Google long-context guide · Anthropic context-window documentation
Do not assume the advertised input limit is also the amount available for an answer. If a model or interface counts generated output or reasoning tokens toward the overall capacity, the prompt and response share that budget. A product may also impose separate output caps or other limits.
What counts toward the window?
A token is a unit used by a model’s tokenizer, not a synonym for a word. Depending on the text and encoding, a token may represent a character, part of a word, a whole word, or punctuation. Language and formatting affect the count, so a fixed word-to-token conversion is only a rough estimate. OpenAI’s guide to understanding and counting tokens
In an API request, counting only the visible prompt can miss other material. Conversation history, message structure, tool definitions and results, schemas, files, images, and other multimodal payloads may contribute, depending on the model and service. Some systems also count reasoning tokens or reserve capacity for the generated response. Consult the relevant provider’s documentation rather than assuming every interface accounts for these items in the same way.
What happens when a request is too large?
When the complete request and its output allowance do not fit, an application may reject the request, truncate or omit some context, or compact a conversation by summarizing older material. The exact behavior depends on the model and interface; do not assume the oldest or least relevant material will be removed in a predictable way. If an answer seems to ignore an earlier detail, check whether that detail was actually included in the request the model received.

A larger window lets a model accept more material, but it does not guarantee that the model will use every detail accurately. Anthropic describes recall and accuracy declining as context grows, and Google notes that retrieval performance varies with the length and nature of the context. These are provider statements, not a universal quantified rule for every model or task. Anthropic context-window documentation · Google long-context guide
For comparisons, check the exact model and version, input and output limits, what the provider counts, availability in the product you use, and performance on your own task. Cost, latency, caching, and how an application handles truncation or compaction matter too. Context length alone is not a reliable ranking of model quality.

How to manage context limits
- Count the complete request. Use the target model’s tokenizer or API tools where available, and include conversation history, tool definitions, schemas, and attached content rather than estimating from plain-text word count. OpenAI’s token guide
- Leave room for the response. Budget for the expected answer and any applicable reasoning or output allowance; do not fill the entire stated input limit with prompt material.
- Trim repetition and irrelevant material. Remove duplicated passages and keep the information needed to answer the question.
- Summarize or split large inputs. Summaries can reduce volume, while processing a document in sections can make a specific task easier to manage. Check that the final request still contains the evidence needed for the answer.
- Make the task easy to locate. Google recommends placing the specific question after long context in many cases. This is a provider workflow suggestion, not a guarantee that every model will retrieve information better. Google long-context guide
- Consider caching repeated context. If the same large material is sent repeatedly, check whether the provider supports context caching and verify its current pricing and behavior before relying on it.
