What Is an LCD (Liquid-Crystal Display)?

LCD stands for liquid-crystal display: a technology that uses electrical signals to control light and form images.

LCD stands for liquid-crystal display. It is a display technology in which electrical signals change how liquid crystals control light, creating the bright and dark areas that form text, numbers, or images. Many LCDs—such as televisions and monitors—use a separate backlight; the liquid-crystal layer regulates that light rather than producing it.

How does an LCD work?

Liquid crystals have optical properties that affect light passing through them. In a common LCD design, an electrical input changes the orientation of the liquid-crystal molecules. Polarizing filters then control how much light passes through each area, making it appear lighter or darker. Arranged into segments or pixels, those areas can display numbers, text, and images.

A watch provides a simplified example: liquid-crystal material sits between conducting glass plates, with polarization filters arranged at right angles. Applying voltage changes how the material affects light, making selected segments visible. Not every LCD uses this exact arrangement; construction varies with the display’s purpose.

Does an LCD need a backlight?

Not always. A common LCD television or monitor uses a backlight, and the liquid-crystal layer controls how much of that light reaches each part of the screen. Some LCDs instead rely on surrounding light, as in reflective display designs. The illumination method depends on the application.

What does “LED TV” mean?

In the familiar term “LED TV,” LED usually describes the light source behind the screen: light-emitting diodes illuminate an LCD panel. The television’s image-forming display technology is still LCD; the LEDs provide its backlight.

Where are LCDs used?

LCD technology appears in digital watches, computer monitors, televisions, and projectors. The arrangement changes by application: a projector can use liquid crystals as light valves, while a watch display may use visible segments instead of a grid of image pixels.
