Yes, streaming video through a hotspot uses your mobile data. Subtitles are not identified in the platform guidance reviewed as a meaningful separate source of data use, but those sources do not measure their exact byte count. In practice, video quality is the much bigger factor; treating subtitles as literally data-free would go beyond the available evidence.
What uses the most data while streaming?
The video stream’s playback quality is the main factor quantified by streaming services. Netflix’s Help Center gives these estimates for its playback quality settings; they are Netflix figures, not universal rates for every service or device:

The practical conclusion that captions have little effect compared with the video is an inference from that guidance, not a measured comparison of the same stream with captions on and off.

Will Netflix’s phone data setting limit streaming over a hotspot?
Not necessarily. Netflix says its mobile data setting applies when viewing on the mobile device over cellular networks; it does not affect viewing when tethered. So if your phone is the hotspot and a TV, laptop, tablet, or streaming device is watching Netflix through it, do not assume the phone’s Netflix mobile setting limits that stream. Netflix explained this distinction in a 2016 article about data usage; for current usage estimates, use its Help Center guidance above.
On the receiving device, look for the streaming app’s playback or data-use controls and lower video quality if available. Also check your carrier’s hotspot allowance: the stream uses hotspot data whether or not subtitles are enabled.

How can you reduce streaming data on a hotspot?
- Lower playback quality: Choose a lower quality or data-use setting in the app on the device receiving the stream, if it offers one. Netflix warns that restricting data can affect video quality.
- Check the trade-off: Disney+ says its lower data-use setting delivers slightly lower video and audio quality. Settings and labels can vary by service and device; verify the control in the app you are using. Disney+’s data-use guidance gives service-specific details.
- Check the hotspot allowance: Review your carrier’s current terms and usage display. A streaming app’s phone-only cellular setting may not control playback on a connected device.
Do Mbps recommendations tell you how much data a stream uses?
No. Mbps describes connection speed; GB per hour describes data volume. Netflix recommends a connection of 3 Mbps or higher for HD 720p, 5 Mbps or higher for FHD 1080p, and 15 Mbps or higher for UHD 4K. These are recommended speeds for quality tiers, not estimates of gigabytes consumed per hour. Netflix lists them in its recommended internet connection speeds guidance.
