What Is an Inswinging Yorker? How It Differs from a Regular Yorker

A yorker describes a very full length; inswing describes inward movement in flight. Here’s how the terms fit together and why the delivery can be difficult to face.

An inswinging yorker is a very full cricket delivery that pitches near the batter’s feet or the base of the stumps and moves inward toward the batter before it lands. “Yorker” describes the delivery’s length and target; “inswinging” describes its movement through the air. A yorker can therefore swing inward, swing away, or show little obvious swing.

What makes a delivery a yorker?

A yorker is bowled very full, with the aim of pitching around the batter’s toes, at the popping crease, or near the base of the stumps. The line can vary: a bowler may target the feet, the stumps, or a spot wide of off stump. The Australian Cricket Institute describes the yorker as a ball bowled “around the toes” and discusses those different target lines in its coaching material.

That makes “yorker” a description of length and intended target, not a promise that the ball travels straight. The ECB’s account of Chris Jordan’s practice distinguishes wide, straight, and leg-stump yorkers, illustrating how the line can change while the delivery remains a yorker: Chris Jordan on how to bowl yorkers.

What does “inswinging” mean?

Inswing describes the ball’s movement in flight toward the striker. It is relative to the batter, not a fixed left-or-right direction: the apparent direction depends on the batter’s handedness and the viewer’s perspective. The ECB’s explanation of swing bowling discusses how a bowler’s plan and seam presentation relate to right- and left-handed batters: Stuart Broad on swing bowling and wobble seam.

The two terms describe different features: length answers where the ball pitches; swing answers how it moves before pitching. So “inswinging yorker” combines a very full intended length with inward movement in the air.

Inswinging yorker vs. a regular yorker

“Regular yorker” is informal shorthand for a yorker when no swing variation is specified; it is not a separate formal category established by the sources cited here. It does not mean the ball must be straight. The useful distinction is whether inward movement is specified:

Term What it describes What it does not guarantee
Yorker A very full delivery aimed near the feet, crease, or base of the stumps. Any particular swing direction.
Inswinging yorker A yorker that moves inward toward the batter in flight. A wicket, an unplayable ball, or a particular left-right path independent of batter handedness.
Outswinging or other yorker A yorker with outward movement, or with little obvious swing. One fixed line; the bowler can still target different areas.

Why the combination can trouble a batter

A yorker aimed at the stumps or feet demands a quick, accurate movement of the bat. If the ball also curves inward, the batter must judge that movement while preparing for a very full delivery, putting the pads and stumps in danger. The International Cricket Council’s account of Wasim Akram’s view of the yorker describes the aim of pitching at the base of the stumps and preventing a straight drive: ICC report on Akram’s assessment of Bumrah’s yorker.

It is a threat, not a guaranteed dismissal. A batter may defend or get the bat down in time, and a delivery that misses its intended length can create a scoring opportunity.

Why yorkers are difficult to execute

The margin for error is small. If the ball lands short of the intended yorker length, it may become a hittable half-volley; if it is too full, it may arrive as a full toss. The Australian Cricket Institute advises bowlers who miss to err on the full side, reasoning that a low full toss is harder to hit than a half-volley. That is coaching advice, not a rule or a guarantee of safety.

Practice guidance also emphasizes choosing and hitting a target. In a 2016 ECB feature, Jordan described separate targets for wide, straight, and leg-stump yorkers, and said his own nine-ball high-intensity drill aimed for about six yorkers and three slower balls. That is his individual drill, not a general accuracy benchmark. Coach Ottis Gibson sometimes changed the target as Jordan gathered to simulate a batter moving in the crease. Read the ECB feature for the drill details.

In a BCCI interview, Umesh Yadav recalled Wasim Akram advising him to focus on the intended pitching spot, body alignment, and follow-through; Yadav also discussed wrist position and release alignment in controlling swing. These are attributed coaching perspectives, not a universally prescribed technique: Umesh Yadav on Akram’s yorker advice. For a beginner, a sensible progression is to work first on landing the ball at a chosen marker, then add swing once the length is repeatable.
