Plan a New Zealand hike around the track’s length, grade, terrain, season, bookings and transport—not just its scenery. Check the Department of Conservation (DOC) page for your exact route, use its trip-specific gear checklist, and leave someone you trust with your itinerary and return time. In New Zealand, hiking is also commonly called tramping; DOC uses both terms.
Choose a track that suits your group
Start by matching the route to the experience and capability of everyone in your party. Compare the distance and usual duration with the track grade, terrain, seasonal conditions and hazards. Then check whether huts or campsites need booking and how you will reach each end of the track. Some routes have separate start and finish points, so transport is part of the route decision, not an afterthought.

DOC describes its Great Walks as premier tracks. The listed walks are Abel Tasman Coast, Heaphy, Hump Ridge, Kepler, Lake Waikaremoana, Milford, Paparoa, Rakiura, Routeburn and Tongariro Northern Circuit; the Whanganui Journey is also listed alongside them. Their distances, durations, conditions and facility rules differ. Check the current DOC page for the particular walk rather than assuming one Great Walk’s information applies to another: DOC Great Walks.

The Routeburn is 33 km one way and usually takes two to four days. DOC describes sections as intermediate and advanced tramping track. From May through October, conditions can be challenging; DOC says attempting the track then requires the relevant skills. On the page reviewed, the Great Walk season runs from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, with hut and campsite bookings required during that period. Check bookings and trip logistics
Check the DOC booking portal and the route’s own page before finalising dates. At the time of the portal information reviewed, bookings for Great Walks, huts, campsites and lodges were open for stays through 30 June 2027. DOC says bookings are first come, first served, that there are no waiting lists for booked-out future facilities, and that not every facility can be booked. Availability and requirements can change, so confirm them directly: DOC bookings.
Demand can be high, but dated occupancy figures are not a guide to what is available now. In a release dated 26 March 2026, DOC reported that four of 11 Great Walks had more bookings than in the previous year. For the season discussed in that release, hut occupancy was around 95% on Milford and Abel Tasman and 91% on Kepler. When booking, plan the whole journey: accommodation before and after the walk, access to the trailhead, and transport from the finish if the route ends elsewhere. DOC notes that local operators serve major towns near Great Walks and that guided trips can provide more comfort. Check route-specific transport options and current operating details as part of your itinerary.

Use DOC’s gear lists by activity and duration: they distinguish Great Walks, short walks under three hours, day hikes under eight hours, overnight and multi-day tramps, alpine trips and other activities. Choose the relevant checklist, then adapt it to the forecast, terrain, season and your experience. A short-walk list is not a substitute for an overnight or alpine checklist. For any trip, think through clothing and equipment in relation to the conditions you may face. DOC’s emergency recommendations include warm and waterproof clothing, emergency shelter, survival and first-aid supplies, navigation tools, a torch with spare batteries, spare food and a distress beacon. Carry equipment you know how to use, and choose what is appropriate for your route and group.

DOC says detailed maps and navigation tools are essential, and that you need to know how to use them. Download maps for offline use before entering an area without phone or internet reception. If you navigate with a phone, take a paper map as backup and ensure the battery will last. Read DOC’s walking and tramping guidance when preparing.

Before leaving, share your route and expected return time with a trusted person. DOC recommends asking them to call 111 if you fail to return as planned. Include your intended track and any relevant timing or route changes in the plan you share, so someone else can recognise when to raise the alarm.
