An Information Card Identity Selector is software that helps a person choose an Information Card for a website or service’s sign-in request and obtain a suitable security token from an identity provider. It is neither a physical card nor the token sent to the service. The term refers to the historical Information Card interoperability model, including Microsoft’s Windows CardSpace; the sources cited here do not establish broad current support or deployment.
What the selector does
In the Information Card model, a relying party—the service asking a user to sign in—specifies what kind of token it will accept and which claims it needs. The selector mediates that request, helps the user choose a card that can meet the requirements, and supports the process of obtaining a token from the relevant identity provider. Microsoft describes the selector as token-type agnostic: it mediates requests rather than being limited to one token type. IBM describes it in its documented federation flow as a browser plug-in or “identity agent.” Microsoft’s interoperability guide and IBM’s Information Card federation documentation explain these roles.

Selector, card, token, and claims: the differences
- Relying party: The service requesting authentication. It sets the token and claims requirements for the sign-in exchange.
- Identity selector: The client software that presents a suitable card choice and mediates the token request.
- Information Card: An artifact representing an identity and its relationship to token issuance. It is not the security token itself.
- Identity provider: The issuer that creates the requested token after the user selects a card.
- Security token: The issued data sent for the service interaction; it carries the claims used in that exchange.
- Claims: Attributes requested or supplied as part of sign-in, such as an email address.
The card represents a way to request a token; the token is obtained when needed. Microsoft’s interoperability guide and Information Card Profile V1.0 reference describe the distinction between the card and token.

A card is suitable only if its issuer can provide the claims the relying party requires. For example, if a service requires an email claim and a card’s issuer does not support that claim, the selector cannot use that card to satisfy the request. IBM’s Information Card claims documentation describes claims as attributes that may be required and explains their role in determining whether a card is useful for a relying party.

Historical scope
Information Cards are a historical interoperability model, not evidence of a current sign-in method supported across today’s services. Microsoft’s technical reference for Information Card Profile V1.0 is dated December 2006 and identifies the profile’s use in Windows CardSpace 1.0, implemented in .NET Framework 3.0. That history helps explain the term, but does not establish present-day availability or widespread use. Microsoft’s Information Card Profile reference
