An in-dash head unit is the receiver mounted in a car’s dashboard that you use to control the audio system. It is also called a car stereo, car receiver, in-dash stereo or deck. It is where you pick a source, such as radio, Bluetooth or a phone, and where you adjust volume and sound settings. What else it does depends on the model.
What a head unit does
The head unit is the part of the audio system you actually interact with. Speakers make the sound. The head unit chooses what is played and manages playback and settings.

Depending on the product, one unit can combine:
- radio reception
- media playback
- Bluetooth calling or streaming
- controls for sound settings
- a display
Current manufacturer models often add smartphone integration such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Some support camera connections or other connected functions. These are examples of what a unit can offer, not requirements of the definition. No head unit has every feature, so check the manufacturer’s specification for the model you are considering.

Other names you will see
- Car stereo and car receiver: the most common everyday terms.
- Deck: shorthand, often used in installation circles.
- In-dash: describes where it sits, in the dashboard opening, as opposed to a unit mounted elsewhere.
Single-DIN and double-DIN
Receivers are commonly sold in two size categories. Double-DIN units are taller than single-DIN units, which gives more room for a large display or extra controls. Manufacturer catalogs still list both.

The DIN label alone does not tell you whether a unit fits your car. Dash openings, trim, mounting points, wiring and vehicle controls differ from vehicle to vehicle. Not every vehicle has a replaceable standard-size receiver at all. If you need exact dimensions, take them from the manufacturer’s specification sheet.
What replacing one can involve
An aftermarket installation may need these parts:
- A dash mounting kit that adapts the vehicle’s opening to the receiver.
- A wiring harness adapter, which installation guidance recommends matching to the factory harness.
- A compatible interface if you want to keep steering-wheel controls, since they may use more complex electronic signals.
Both the kit and the adapter are vehicle-specific, so confirm fitment for your make, model and year before buying. Procedures also vary between vehicles.

- Form factor and vehicle compatibility.
- Smartphone integration, and whether it is wired or wireless.
- Audio and media sources.
- Display and camera support.
- Whether the mounting and wiring interfaces you need are available.
As an example of a current product, Pioneer lists the SPH-EVO98DAB-UNI as a modular receiver with a 9-inch multimedia display and wireless smartphone connectivity. Pioneer describes installation packages and specific form factors for it, so it is not universally compatible.
