What Is an HDMI Capture Card—and Do You Need One for Streaming?

An HDMI capture card sends a console or other HDMI source into computer streaming software. Find out when you need one, what specs to compare, and how to connect it.

An HDMI capture card takes video and audio from a console or another HDMI source and makes that signal available to computer software for streaming or recording. You usually do not need one to stream casually from a PS5 or Xbox, or to stream a game from the same PC it runs on. A card is useful when you want console video in computer software, more control over your production, or a separate PC to handle the stream.

What an HDMI capture card does

A capture card receives an HDMI signal and makes it available to recording or streaming software on a computer. In a typical external setup, HDMI runs from the console or other source to the card’s HDMI IN; a USB connection links the card to the computer; and the software selects the card as a video source. Some cards also have HDMI OUT for passthrough to a TV or monitor. Desktop internal cards may connect through PCIe instead of USB. Elgato’s explainer describes the card’s role in bringing a source into a computer workflow.

Passthrough and capture are different outputs. Passthrough is what you see on the connected display while playing; capture is the signal the computer records or sends to viewers. A card may pass a higher resolution or refresh rate to a monitor than it can capture, so check both specifications rather than relying on a single headline number. HDR support on the display path does not necessarily mean the captured feed is HDR at the same resolution and frame rate. Elgato’s passthrough-versus-capture guide explains the distinction.

Do you need a capture card to stream?

Console streaming

For casual broadcasting, built-in streaming options on PS5 and Xbox may be enough. A capture card brings console video into computer software, where you can build scenes and add overlays with more production control. Whether that extra control is worth the setup depends on what you want your stream to look and sound like. The platform details here reflect Elgato’s guide last updated July 15, 2026; check current console documentation for the options available to your model and account. Elgato’s guide to whether you need a capture card covers the console use case.

Streaming from the same PC you play on

Usually, no. Streaming software can capture a game running on that computer directly. A capture card does not do the PC’s encoding and is generally not useful just to capture a game from the same machine.

Using two PCs

A card can be useful when one PC runs the game and a second handles stream production. The gaming PC sends its HDMI output to the card connected to the streaming PC; the streaming computer receives the video in its software and handles the stream workflow.

Nintendo Switch 2 and other console workflows

Elgato’s guide, last updated July 15, 2026, says Nintendo Switch 2 has no built-in streaming option, so streaming its gameplay through a computer workflow requires a capture card. For other consoles, requirements and built-in options vary. A card can also bring console footage into computer software for longer recordings or customized layouts, but specific console recording limits vary; check current platform documentation rather than assuming a universal limit.

What to check before buying

  • Capture resolution and frame rate: This is the maximum detail and motion rate available to the recording or stream.
  • Passthrough resolution and frame rate: This is what the card supports on its display output while you play. It may differ from capture.
  • HDR: Check capture and passthrough separately; display-path HDR does not guarantee an HDR recording at the same resolution or frame rate.
  • Computer connection and compatibility: Confirm USB generation or PCIe requirements, supported operating system, computer hardware requirements, and whether a hub is supported.
  • Source and setup: Confirm that the source has HDMI output, whether a console setting affects gameplay capture, and whether the box includes the cables you need. Passthrough requires a display connection from the card’s HDMI OUT.

For a concrete model-specific example, Elgato’s Game Capture Neo manual lists HDMI input, HDMI passthrough, USB 3.0, up to 4K60 HDR passthrough, and up to 1080p60 recording/capture. The manual lists Windows 10 64-bit, macOS 12, or iPadOS 17 or later, along with computer hardware requirements. These are specifications for this model, not a general capture-card standard; check the current manual before buying. Game Capture Neo manual.

How to connect an external capture card

  1. Connect the source: Run an HDMI cable from the console or other HDMI source to the card’s HDMI IN.
  2. Connect a display for passthrough, if needed: Run HDMI from the card’s HDMI OUT to the TV or monitor. This is the display path for playing while the computer captures.
  3. Connect the card to the computer: Use the card’s specified USB port or, for an internal card, the required PCIe slot. For the Game Capture Neo setup, the manual recommends a direct USB 3.0 or better connection and says not to use a USB hub.
  4. Open your recording or streaming software: Add or select the capture card as the video source. Elgato’s quick-start guide names OBS Studio and Streamlabs as software options.
  5. Check the picture and audio: Confirm the software sees the intended source and that the display, if connected, shows passthrough. If capture quality matters, verify the software’s selected capture settings against the card’s capture—not passthrough—limits. See the Elgato Game Capture 4K X quick-start guide.

Troubleshooting common capture problems

The computer does not detect the card

  • Check that the card is connected to the computer and that the USB port meets the model’s requirements. For the Neo setup, connect directly to USB 3.0 or better rather than through a hub.
  • Recheck the source-to-card connection: the console or other device should feed HDMI IN. Use the manufacturer’s manual to confirm port and operating-system compatibility.

The software shows a black picture from a PS5

For PS5 gameplay capture with the cited 4K X guide, HDCP being enabled can cause a black capture feed. That guide gives the console path as Settings > System > HDMI > Enable HDCP; turn the setting off for gameplay capture as directed by the guide. This is specific to the described gameplay-capture case. A capture card does not remove content protections, and this setting is not a way to capture protected video. Consult the 4K X quick-start guide for its instructions.

The monitor works, but the recording is lower quality

Compare the card’s capture specification with its passthrough specification and the capture mode selected in your software. A high-refresh or high-resolution passthrough signal does not establish that the card captures at that same resolution or frame rate.

When a capture card is not the right tool

A capture card is for bringing an HDMI source—such as console gameplay—into computer software. It is not required to capture a game directly on the PC that runs it, and it is not the same as a service that loops already-uploaded videos as a YouTube live stream. If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded uploads rather than capture a console or camera feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not live camera or gameplay input.
