Use separate portrait and landscape compositions whenever possible. A landscape overlay rarely survives a center crop intact: titles, alerts, faces, and other important details can be cut off or become cramped. Choose a platform’s dual-format feature or configure separate outputs in your broadcasting software, then preview both orientations before you go live.
Why one overlay may not work in both orientations
Horizontal video is commonly composed at 16:9, while vertical video is 9:16, according to Google’s YouTube Help documentation. The canvases differ in shape, so an overlay positioned for a wide frame may sit outside the useful area of a phone-shaped frame.

A center crop can turn a landscape image into a portrait view, but it may cut off subjects or graphics near the sides. Treat each orientation as its own composition: check the crop, reposition key elements, or build a dedicated portrait layout rather than assuming one design will fit both.

These features are not interchangeable. The platform’s own layout, a broadcasting application’s scenes, and separate encoder outputs may offer different controls. Check instructions for the exact platform and software versions you plan to use; interfaces and compatibility can change.

Set up and check both compositions
- Choose where dual format will be configured. Decide whether to use YouTube Live Control Room, TikTok LIVE Studio, Twitch’s supported dual-format workflow, or Restream Studio or its OBS plugin. Follow that platform’s current setup path rather than assuming one app’s settings apply to another.
- Arrange the landscape view. Place the main content and overlay elements for the wide canvas. Keep essential information within the visible composition; do not rely on a portrait crop to preserve items near the left and right edges.
- Build or edit the portrait view. Preview the 9:16 composition and move or stack key elements for the narrow frame. In YouTube’s documented vertical editing canvas, options include center crop, fit-to-phone-width, and stacked layout; you can adjust zoom and position there.
- Route YouTube encoder outputs correctly. If using a third-party encoder with YouTube, select the vertical stream key for the vertical output and verify that the intended content and format go to each corresponding key. YouTube specifically advises checking this routing before the stream starts.
- Preview both orientations. Check titles, alerts, faces, and essential visual information in portrait and landscape, ideally on a phone held in each orientation. Twitch’s dual-format guidance recommends checking the stream on a phone in both orientations.
- Make scene changes deliberately. For Twitch’s workflow, use the primary horizontal scene menu to transition linked scenes, as described in Twitch’s guidance. Confirm what the corresponding portrait presentation shows before broadcasting.
- Confirm when orientation settings become fixed. YouTube says vertical format cannot be added after a stream has started. Restream Studio says an active channel’s orientation cannot be changed mid-stream. Configure the intended outputs before going live.
Can I use one overlay for vertical and horizontal streams?
You can reuse the same graphic elements, but do not assume the same complete overlay will fit both canvases. A crop may work when the important content sits centrally; it can fail when labels, alerts, or subjects are near the edges. Preview the portrait result and adjust the zoom, position, or layout where the platform allows it. A purpose-built portrait composition gives you more control over where elements appear.
Common problems and fixes
- Important content disappears in portrait. The vertical view may be center-cropping the landscape frame. Try a different documented layout option, adjust zoom and position, or redesign the portrait composition around the narrow canvas.
- The wrong content appears in a format. Check the encoder’s output-to-stream-key routing and confirm the content and format match each destination.
- The portrait view cannot be enabled after starting. YouTube says vertical format cannot be added once a stream has started. Stop and configure it before the next broadcast; do not count on adding the format mid-stream.
- The orientation cannot be changed during a Restream Studio broadcast. Restream documents this limitation for an active channel. Set the orientation before going live.
- A scene transition does not show the expected portrait composition. Check Twitch’s linked-scene workflow and use its primary horizontal scene menu for transitions, then preview both outputs before the broadcast.
- The instructions do not match your software version. Platform behavior and compatibility requirements change. Check the current official help page for your platform and broadcasting application; Twitch’s page, for example, specifies OBS Studio 32.0.0 or newer.
