An Ethernet switch connects wired devices or local area network (LAN) segments and forwards Ethernet frames using MAC addresses. “N-way” is wording used in some product descriptions—not a separate IEEE switch class—and its meaning depends on the manufacturer’s context.
What does “N-way” mean on an Ethernet switch?
“N-way” is not established here as a formal IEEE classification. For example, LevelOne uses “N-Way” in the name of its 5-port and 8-port SOHO switches and describes those products as performing auto-negotiation. The label alone does not guarantee a particular port count or feature set; check the specifications for the exact product.

In that product description, auto-negotiation refers to the switch negotiating a link with a connected device. The phrase “N-way” should be read as manufacturer wording in context, not as a universal technical standard.

An Ethernet switch is commonly described as a Layer 2 device because it forwards Ethernet frames using MAC-layer addressing. IEEE describes the corresponding MAC bridge function as connecting LANs so end stations on separate LANs can communicate transparently to higher protocol layers, as if attached to the same LAN. IEEE’s description of MAC bridges explains this role.

A switch handles traffic within a bridged local network. A router, by contrast, forwards traffic between IP networks at the network layer.
How a switch forwards Ethernet traffic
- It learns source addresses. When a frame arrives, the switch can associate its source MAC address with the port where it arrived.
- It checks the destination. The switch consults its learned forwarding information to determine whether it knows the port associated with the destination MAC address.
- It forwards or filters the frame. It sends the frame toward the appropriate port or filters it according to its forwarding information. IEEE’s LAN interconnection overview describes this bridge learning and forwarding function.
How standards and VLANs fit in
IEEE lists IEEE 802.1Q-2022, Bridges and Bridged Networks, as an active standard covering MAC service support in bridged networks and the operation of MAC bridges and VLAN bridges. The IEEE page lists amendments through 802.1Qdy-2025. This standards context does not mean every Ethernet switch supports configurable VLANs: available features depend on the specific model.

What to check when choosing a switch
“N-way” by itself is not enough to identify the right switch. Compare the specifications that affect your network:
- Port count: allow for the devices and uplinks you need to connect.
- Link speed: confirm the supported Ethernet speeds meet your requirements.
- PoE: check whether the switch must supply power to devices such as access points or cameras.
- Management and VLANs: determine whether you need configuration features rather than basic plug-and-play switching.
If you are searching by category rather than a specific model, “Ethernet network switch” is the clearer term. The product description’s port count and specifications—not the “N-way” label alone—tell you what it offers.
