On iPhone, Focus lets you choose which people can notify you and configure call exceptions. Android’s Do Not Disturb and Modes offer similar interruption controls, but exact settings vary by phone and Android version. Neither setting guarantees what a caller hears or whether a call reaches voicemail.
What “block calls” means in Focus
A phone that does not ring may still be receiving the call. Call controls in Focus and Do Not Disturb govern interruptions and notifications; they are not a universal promise that the call will be declined, disconnected, or prevented from reaching voicemail. The caller-side result is not established consistently across devices, operating-system versions, and carriers.

- Silenced: The call does not interrupt you with the usual sound or alert.
- Rejected: The phone declines the call. Focus documentation does not establish that this happens in every configuration.
- Sent to voicemail or given an unavailable message: The result can depend on the phone and carrier; Focus settings do not guarantee it.
How to control calls on iPhone
Open Settings > Focus, choose the Focus you use—such as Do Not Disturb, Work, or Sleep—and open People. From there, configure whose notifications are allowed or silenced and review the call options available for that Focus. If you want specific people to be able to interrupt you, add or allow them in the Focus’s People settings and check the call exceptions. The available controls let you tailor the Focus rather than treating it as an all-or-nothing call switch.

Check repeated calls and Emergency Bypass
Apple documents an optional repeated-calls exception: when enabled, two or more calls from the same person within three minutes can be allowed through. It is not unconditional; check whether the option is enabled in the Focus you use. A contact’s Emergency Bypass setting can also allow sounds and vibrations when notifications are silenced, so review it if you need stricter silencing.
How to control calls on Android
Android uses Do Not Disturb and other Modes to manage interruptions. Google’s Android instructions describe People controls for allowing or blocking calls, messages, and conversations. Look in the People or call settings of the specific mode you use to see which callers are allowed.

Menu names and available choices depend on the phone manufacturer and Android version. Google notes that some steps apply only to Android 14 and later, so use the labels and options shown on your own device rather than assuming every Android phone has the same path or behavior.

Check the mode before relying on it
- Open the Focus or Do Not Disturb mode you actually plan to use.
- Review its People and call settings, including allowed callers and any exceptions.
- On iPhone, check repeated calls and Emergency Bypass if you need stricter silencing.
- If a particular person must be able to reach you, confirm they are allowed in that mode instead of assuming calls always come through.
