An Ethereum transaction fee—often called a gas fee—is the ETH paid for the computational work a transaction uses. For a typical EIP-1559 execution transaction, calculate it as gas actually used × effective fee per gas. The base fee is burned, while the priority fee (tip) goes to the validator that includes the transaction.
How do you calculate an Ethereum transaction fee?
As Ethereum.org’s gas guide frames the question: “So, how can you tell how much to pay?” Start with the gas the transaction actually consumes, then multiply it by the effective price per unit of gas:

Transaction fee = gas actually used × (base fee + priority fee actually paid)

For example, Ethereum.org illustrates a simple transfer using 21,000 gas, a 10 gwei base fee and a 2 gwei tip: 21,000 × (10 + 2) = 252,000 gwei, or 0.000252 ETH. This is a worked example, not a live quote or a universal transfer cost.

What do the fee terms mean?
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Gas | A protocol accounting unit for computational work. |
| Gas used | The units consumed when the transaction executes. A basic ETH transfer is documented as using 21,000 gas; contract interactions can use different amounts depending on the work they perform. Ethereum.org’s transaction documentation gives the transfer baseline. |
| Base fee per gas | The protocol-set fee for inclusion in a block. The protocol burns it rather than paying it to the validator. |
| Priority fee per gas | An optional tip above the base fee that is paid to the validator including the transaction and can encourage faster inclusion. |
| Max fee per gas | The sender’s ceiling for the total per-gas price, covering the base fee and priority fee. It is a cap, not automatically the amount paid. |
| Gas limit | The maximum gas the transaction is allowed to consume. Gas not used is refunded. |
The Ethereum Foundation Glossary defines a gas fee as “The amount paid to execute a transaction, equal to the gas used multiplied by the price per unit.”
How are the base fee and tip determined?
The base fee adjusts according to gas use in preceding blocks relative to a target: use above target pushes it up, while use below target pushes it down. EIP-1559 describes this mechanism as a dynamically adjusting network fee that is burned. Senders set a maximum total fee and a maximum priority fee; for a transaction to be included, its fee cap must cover the block’s base fee. The effective tip cannot exceed either the sender’s priority-fee cap or the difference between the fee cap and base fee. See the EIP-1559 specification.

Why does the fee change?
- The transaction’s work: a basic transfer and a smart-contract interaction can consume different amounts of gas.
- Network demand: the base fee changes with block gas use, and the priority fee a sender offers can vary with how quickly they want inclusion.
- Fee settings: a wallet’s displayed maximum is a ceiling; the final charge depends on actual gas used and the effective price per gas.
Wallets commonly estimate and display fee recommendations, but fee rates move with network conditions. The official sources cited here do not establish a current live fee, so check a wallet or live block data for a quote at the time you transact.

Is the transaction fee the same as the ETH being sent?
No. The sender pays the transfer value and the transaction fee. The recipient receives the specified transfer value; the gas charge is separate.

Can a failed transaction still cost ETH?
Yes. A failed transaction may still consume gas while executing, and the sender can be charged for that work. The gas limit is a maximum rather than a promise that the full limit will be spent; unused gas is refunded.

This calculation describes the execution fee for a typical EIP-1559 transaction. Ethereum also has other transaction types, including blob transactions, and activity on a Layer 2 network can involve different fee components. If a fee estimate concerns blob data or another network, identify that context rather than treating this execution-fee formula as the complete charge.
