An Ethereum smart account is an account whose transaction rules can be controlled by programmable smart-contract logic. Depending on its implementation, it may support features such as batching transactions, account recovery, limited permissions, or sponsored gas. Those capabilities are not automatic: they depend on the account, wallet, chain, and supporting services.
What is an Ethereum smart account?
A smart account uses code to define how transactions are authorized and carried out. That contrasts with a conventional externally owned account, or EOA, whose transactions are authorized by a private key under Ethereum’s fixed protocol rules. A smart account can apply account-specific validation and execution logic instead.
“Smart account” is an ecosystem term, not a guarantee of one standard feature set. It helps to distinguish three parts: the account contract or account model, the wallet application used to manage it, and supporting infrastructure such as bundlers, paymasters, or relayers. What you can do depends on how those parts work together.

A smart account is not simply a new name for a private-key wallet. Some approaches add smart-contract behavior to an existing EOA, while others use a separate smart-contract account.
How does ERC-4337 work?
ERC-4337 provides a way for smart-contract accounts to use programmable validation and execution without requiring a change to Ethereum’s core protocol. Instead of submitting an ordinary transaction directly from an EOA, a user submits a UserOperation. Bundlers handle these operations through a separate UserOperation mempool and submit them to an EntryPoint contract for processing.

This is an alternate transaction pipeline, not a synonym for every smart account. The account and the wallet still determine which operations are allowed, while infrastructure such as bundlers helps move them through the system.
Is EIP-7702 the same as ERC-4337?
No. ERC-4337 defines a UserOperation and bundler pipeline for smart-contract accounts. EIP-7702 lets an existing EOA delegate execution to contract code. The EOA keeps its address and its original key remains in ultimate control; the delegation can later be changed or reset. Wallets can use this mechanism to offer smart-account behavior without requiring migration to a different address.

The two mechanisms are distinct and may be used together in some implementations. Ethereum.org’s 2026 overview describes ERC-4337 and EIP-7702 as practical paths, while characterizing EIP-8141 as a draft not committed for inclusion in the upgrade discussed there. Treat future protocol plans as proposals unless their status is confirmed.

- Batching multiple actions into one operation.
- Recovery arrangements, shared authorization, or backup signers.
- Session keys or scoped permissions that limit what a key can do.
- Sponsored transaction fees or payment in a token other than ETH.
These are possible capabilities, not standard features guaranteed in every account. Before relying on one, check that the specific wallet exposes it on the chain you use and understand which keys, modules, and relayers are involved.

It may be able to. A paymaster or another supported arrangement can sponsor fees, and some implementations may allow payment in a token other than ETH. Whether either option is available depends on the account, wallet, chain, and service provider; “smart account” alone does not mean transactions are free or that ETH is never needed.

Are Ethereum smart accounts safe?
Safety depends on the account code, its configuration, the wallet, and any infrastructure it trusts. Programmability can enable useful controls, but it also makes it important to understand who can authorize actions and what permissions have been granted.
EIP-7702 delegation deserves particular care. Delegated code can make calls as the user, including token approvals and transfers. A malicious or buggy delegation target could therefore put assets at risk. Ethereum.org describes delegated code as a security boundary and advises builders not to treat delegation to app-controlled code casually. Hardware-wallet guidance likewise cautions that delegation gives the contract control over account assets. A hardware wallet is a signing and security tool, not itself a smart account.
- Check the exact account or delegation target before approving it.
- Review what permissions modules and session keys receive, and whether they can be removed.
- Confirm how recovery works and who can exercise it.
- Verify feature availability for the particular wallet and chain instead of assuming support from a standards label.
What does ERC-7579 mean for modular smart accounts?
ERC-7579 focuses on modular smart accounts. It defines a smart account in that context as “A smart contract account that has a modular architecture.” Its aim is to make modules more usable across accounts and wallet applications, improve interoperability, and reduce vendor lock-in while leaving room for implementation differences.
Support for ERC-7579 does not, by itself, establish that an account is secure or that a particular module is available. Check the account’s actual modules, permissions, and wallet compatibility.
